The soft beat of Solstice’s wings sent the air popping around my ears as she began her descent.

Almost there.

A bolt of blue fire shot past us, making me scream as Solstice roared in pain. The sudden jolt of her agony raked through my mind like raw blades, blinding me for a moment.

Then we were falling.

Solstice was hurt, but she pitched hard to recover her speed as she flapped her wings, then yanked her tail to right herself. The move nearly threw me off since she hadn’t given me any warning.

But she was going to be okay. Except, why were there Wild Dragons on us now?

Killian! I shouted, worried that something terrible had happened.

No response met my cry, but that didn’t mean he was hurt. It was entirely possible that he was just out of telepathic range.

I couldn’t allow myself to assume the worst.

Three monstrosities burst through the shadows, revealing that these were likely new Wild Dragons given their greater size. While it was a terrifying sight, it still eased my fears regarding Killian.

“Where are these things coming from?” I hissed.

It would have been helpful had Lily been here with me to convert these Wild Dragons back into their human form, but I wasn’t sure if her little trick would even work here.

It was just as well.

But it meant that this time, I was really on my own.

Solstice pitched low and the ground rushed up at us.

“Easy girl,” I said, but then I sensed another wave of pain from her.

She wasn’t healing, either.

I hated this. I hated being so helpless.

The second Solstice hit the ground, I dove off into a trained roll. My shoulder cracked against the rocks and a snap radiated through my body with a jolt of pain.

I’ll just add that to my growing list of injuries, I surmised.

Adrenaline pumped through my veins, allowing me to push aside the discomfort and focus on the task at hand.

Solstice reared on our attackers who had landed with us. She released a wave of golden fire, steaming the mist in the air. It sent the Wild Dragons snarling as they momentarily retreated.

Solstice was a Dragon Queen, and that wasn’t just a hollow title.

It meant that she would not become stagnant in her power. She would continue to grow long after graduation, and that was evident now as steam drifted from her nostrils, twinkling with golden motes.

Her golden eye rolled to find me as she sent me a quick recap of her plan.

My stomach dropped as she displayed a similar plan as Killian’s, one that had her leading the Wild Dragons away while I saved the Lost Queen.

But this time, I’d truly be on my own.

I don’t like this, I thought at her, not with words but with sensation that had my stomach twisting into knots.

The Wild Dragons advanced, not giving us much time to come up with a better solution.

Solstice’s nostrils flared as if to say, Time’s up. If it was good enough for Killian and Topaz, then it’s good enough for me.
