If the wyvern inside escaped her egg before I took care of that corruption, she would be lost.

I couldn’t allow that to happen.

Solstice keened from above and fed me an urgent image. I saw myself jumping to the right and rolling away, so I didn’t question it. I immediately copied the image.

A blast of dark dragonfire burned the ground where I’d been standing, sending the soft dirt boiling like lava.

My legs worked hard as I sprung forward toward the oily sheen of darkness. I didn’t second guess if my goddess powers were going to work—they had to.

Icy energy burned up my forearms as I sank my fingers into the surface.

And then I began the purge.

This was my power. This was my reason for being. I could scourge out corruption and burn it into ash.

The army on the other side of the bars screeched in surprise.

That’s when they parted like a sea and a male stepped through the bars as if they didn’t exist at all.

He was made of pure shadow. Nothing about him was corporeal except his face. His eyes glowed with red power and he opened his mouth to show vampiric teeth.

“You took the bait, Vivienne,” he said.

He’d only spoken in a whisper, but his words surrounded me as they rolled through the black storm.

Killing Vera had left an empty throne for corruption to crown.

It seemed that the corruption wasn’t going to wait for the Lost Queens to resurrect her.

It had found someone new to fill the void.

Killian’s battle cry sounded and the male looked up.

And smiled.

With one wave of his hand he sent a blast that shoved Killian and Topaz high up in the sky. My mate’s call for me vanished as he disappeared.

But our connection remained. I felt him inside the storm fighting for me.

Get the egg, Killian instructed in my mind. Then ride Solstice out of there, you hear me? I’ll keep the skies clear.

I didn’t like the idea of Killian handling all the Wild Dragons alone. The morality of how he dealt with him seemed to pale in the possibility that he was going to die trying to keep the way open for me.

A golden glow appeared as Solstice dove down, sending a pillar of golden magic blasting into the barrier.

I joined her efforts with my own. I cried out as I pushed all my weight into the darkness and wished for it to burn away.

It only took a few moments before I fell through and landed on the egg. The little creature inside keened for help as her muzzle poked through.

I knew better than to help a wyvern break free from its shell. This was the first test, one that would determine her fate.

She would stand on her own feet and soar into the skies through her own power. If I helped her now, it would bind her to me in an unhealthy way, and I wasn’t her Dragonrider—assuming she had one.

Instead, I lifted the egg which was a bit larger than others I’d encountered before and tucked it into my arm.

“Solstice,” I pleaded as I looked up.

But her light had disappeared.
