That assumption wasn’t wrong.

Our bond told me that he knew exactly how I felt about this.

He just didn’t agree with me.

Grinding my teeth together, I fed Solstice another image.

Those two, I ordered her as I pictured the two dragons forcing Killian to grab another spear from his weapon’s rack.

I wasn’t going to allow him to kill the Wild Dragons, even if it meant risking my life.

Solstice obeyed without hesitation. She keened as she spread her wings and pumped down, sending us rocketing upward.

Straight into the two dragons facing Killian.

It left us open in the rear as the dragons we’d been dancing around chased us.

Their icy, cold dark fire followed us, but I trusted in Solstice’s skill and speed.

We’d practiced for this.

And besides that… we needed to win.

There wasn’t another option.

Killian growled when he spotted my reckless move.

“Vivi!” he shouted as something hard hit me from behind.

And then I was falling into the darkness.

Alone.

CHAPTER 8

The breath rushed out of me when I hit the ground.

Hard.

Pain sliced through my chest, suggesting I’d broken something, but the adrenaline kept me from feeling it too strongly.

There wasn’t time to review any potential injuries.

Because I’d landed right in front of the egg.

The air hummed like an electric power line as I dug my fingers into the surprisingly soft dirt. I crawled toward it, ignoring the roars and icy heat of corrupted dragonfire above me.

My sole focus rested on the egg and the newly budding soul I felt from within.

That soul wasn’t corrupted, not yet. Even though an entire layer of corruption had formed a shell around it, there was still a chance.

The crack I’d seen before was actually the dragon within trying to break free.

We’re not too late! I shouted in my mind, although I wasn’t sure if I was talking to Solstice, Killian, or someone else entirely.

The new queen, perhaps?

A tiny claw poked through the hard shell, sending it flaking away.
