Solstice, however, was pure light. She gleamed under me and roared, releasing a blast of light into the darkness.

It sent the oily substance shrieking away like a dying creature.

Perhaps it was alive, in a sense. Corruption was originally the result of dragons feeding on their emotions. It was a byproduct of destruction of the most intimate form.

The loss of a piece of one’s soul.

And if I’d learned anything, dragon souls were different from humans. They weren’t forced into a permanent afterlife. It seemed the rebirth was an option, at least for some.

Those like Solstice, Eclipse, and the other Lost Dragon Queens.

Thunder rolled through the storm as Solstice cut our way through.

Topaz roared and added his force to the effort to forge a path. A sparkling mixture of blue fire rushed from his open maw and amplified Solstice’s efforts.

“Keep going,” I urged them and opened up my heart to Solstice.

I felt when Killian did the same.

It was a selfless act to be vulnerable enough to give our hearts to our dragons.

But I trusted Solstice, and Killian trusted Topaz. Our dragonrider bonds allowed us to share our emotions, our fears, and our desires with our dragons.

That sort of faith resulted in power.

The air crackled all around me as a shockwave blasted out, proving the effort worked.

It left me feeling dizzy and I clutched onto the saddle so I wouldn’t fall.

We kept going even when the storm thickened until dark wisps stung the end of my nose.

We were close.

An echo of voices rang through the storm, indicating that we weren’t alone.

I leaned over Solstice’s flank as I searched for the floor. We’d been steadily descending, but I couldn’t see the ground yet.

My instincts screamed with warning.

What’s wrong? Killian’s voice asked in my mind.

I feel like we’re surrounded, I mentally replied as I continued to search the darkness.

What if I’d made a mistake?

What if this was a trap?

The next instant confirmed my fear as massive iron bars locked us in. They’d been disguised by the dense clouds but Solstice’s efforts dissipated it enough to show us where we’d arrived.

The storm rushed out all at once as Solstice gave one final roar, revealing that we’d found the egg, but we were too late.

A long crack formed on its shell as a black, oily shield swarmed around it.

Massive glittering, black wings broke through the edge of the storm as corrupted Wild Dragons broke through.

My stomach dropped as Solstice made an evasive move, heading for the low ground while Topaz launched upward.

Muscle memory took over in the practiced move to close in on the enemy from above and below. Solstice being the faster dragon between the two, always took the more difficult route.
