“Would you like to open them alone?” Her head spins unnaturally fast. “Careful there, love.”

“I can’t do this without you.”

“Okay.” I bend down and kiss her head. “Let’s see what’s inside.” I watch her shaking hands lift the lid of the first box.

“Are these gold bricks?”

“I lift one and nod. “This is probably worth close to a million dollars.”

“There are a dozen.”

“It’s nice insurance against the end of the world scenarios.” I pick up a bag filled with gemstones and notice a blue diamond in the mix. “This will buy you a small country.”

I notice Lina’s lack of excitement. “Let’s open the other one.”

“Might as well.” She pulls the lid off and picks up an envelope with her name on it.

“The biggest treasure of all.” Pressing it against her chest, she closes her eyes. “I am so fucking happy for you, love.”

“This is all I wanted.”

Seeing a person you love get something they really want is more powerful than I could’ve imagined. “What’s this?” I pick up a small velvet bag, and a gold band falls out.

“That matches the one Mama wore around her neck.” She takes out several stacks of cash and pulls out a stack of envelopes. Opening the first, she scans it quickly. “Is this a marriage certificate?”

Leaning over her shoulder, I study the document. “Yes. Your parents got married in Saint Petersburg.” She flips through the other envelopes. “Do you want to read the letter here or take it back to the hotel?”

“I want to savor it.” She runs her hands over the gold bars. “Should we leave these here?”

“Yes. The safe at the hotel isn’t adequate, so let’s leave them here for now.”

She slides the gold band into her pocket and takes the stack of envelopes. “I’m ready to go.”

I close both boxes and slide them into their homes in the wall. “All in all, a good day in the Caymans.”

After the boxes are secured by the bank manager, and we’ve collected a fat envelope with all the account information, we stride out of the bank, and I know my wife is overwhelmed.

Fedor pops out of the SUV. “All good?”

“Yes,” Lina says quietly.

“Any activity?”

“No. Grigory confirmed there wasn’t any activity at the airport, so it looks like we’re off the radar for now.”

“Good.” I open the back door and help my wife into the car. “We’re gonna take a couple of days off. You can hang out at the hotel or head home. It’s up to you.”

“I’ll stay at the hotel.” He looks from side to side. “You can never be too careful.”

I slap him on the back. “It won’t be forgotten.”

“I know.”

I ignore his cocky smile and slide into the car beside my wife, knowing we have earned a couple of days of relaxation.
