I lift my arm and feel the telltale pain from a bullet wound to the chest. “Lina?”

“Hasn’t left the building,” Vlad responded. “She’s asleep on a chair just outside the door.”

“Fuck.” I try to straighten my body and find it more difficult than I’ll ever admit. “Who was it?”

“Fuckers from Russia contracted some local boys to take you out.”

“How local?”

“Cartels,” Vlad said quietly. “The Bianchis took their leaders out.”

“Why the fuck did we leave it to the Mafia?”

“You gotta ask the Vor.” He rubs his hand over his mouth. “I got the impression the Don had a score to settle and decided to kill two birds with one stone.”

I nod slowly and feel pain shoot from my neck deep into my brain. What kind of bullet did the Doc pull out?”

“Jacketed hollow point.”

“Fuck me.” I drop my head against the pillow. “We didn’t lose any men, did we?”

“No.” He rolls his shoulders. “Do you remember what happened before you were shot?”

“Vaguely.”

“You got a lot of drugs in your system right now.”

I draw in a slow breath. “I could probably use a few more because my gut feels likes it’s on fire.”

“You want me to send Lina in?”

“When she wakes up.” I study the makeshift door made of plastic sheets and tell myself I will serve justice soon enough. “We got any intel on who orchestrated this bullshit?”

“Grigory is putting together a list, so we should have a full picture shortly.”

“I’m going to wipe out every mother fucker who came after us.” I close my eyes. “My wife was caught in a firefight, which will not go unaddressed.”

“Maybe go easy on the whole vengeance thing in front of her.” He looks over his shoulder. “She feels responsible and has been beating herself up pretty good.” Chucking, he drops down into a chair. “If the doctor hadn’t put you together like humpty dumpty, she probably would’ve done everything she could to follow you into the grave.”

I let a quiet groan. “Vlad, you can’t let that happen. Ever. I don’t care what you have to do. I don’t make it out. You keep her fucking alive.”

“You gotta tell me what you did. It’s only been a month, and the woman doesn’t see a life without you.”

Emotions I can’t name fills my body, and I swallow slowly. “Must be my wit and charm.”

“Considering you weren’t blessed with either, that’s not it.”

“Some souls are just meant to be together.” A simple fucking explanation for the unexplainable. The sound of the velcro ripping makes me look up. My wife is a sight that would make a dead man come back to life. “Hello, love.”

Walking slowly in my direction, tears stream down her face. “Now would be a good time to ask for the keys cause I’m drugged up enough to say yes.”

Her soft body embraces me gently, and I know that if I ever need to be put back together again, Lina’s touch will make it possible.

“I’m so sorry, Yuri.”

“Stop that,” I say sternly. “No apologies between us.” Lifting her head away from my chest, I look into her grief-stricken eyes. “All is well.”

“I would kill the men who shot at you if they were still alive.” She wipes a tear away. “I’d rip them limb from limb for daring to hurt my beloved.”
