“I’m going to pretend this all makes sense for now.” I press my finger to the pain shooting through my temple. “And hope at some point that it will.”

“That’s probably best because we are racing against the clock.”

“Do you have someone in mind?”

“The obvious choice is Yuri because of your mutual attraction, but I think it might pose more challenges.” Strumming her fingers thoughtfully, she stares out the window. “A stranger would be less complicated because feelings wouldn’t be involved.”

“My mind is spinning.”

“As it should be. Four days ago, you were not the heiress to a fortune.”

“The money doesn’t mean that much to me.”

“You’re not dying to go on a trip around the world and fill your home with art?”

“Not if it means marrying someone I don’t like.”

“Believe me, no one gets that more than me. My marriage to Alexey was arranged, and I had no choice.”

“You don’t look like a woman who’s miserable.”

“I’m not. I fell in love and would choose him in a hundred lifetimes.” She covers my hand. “But I am the exception to the rule, so let me help you control your fortune so you have choices and can find a life that makes you happy.”

“Is that possible?”

“Absolutely. When the estate is settled, I will help you move your inheritance so far away from grabby hands that no one but you can access it.”

“You really are a fairy godmother.”

“Godwitch.” She winks. “I think it has a much better ring.”

“I couldn’t agree more.” She opens the laptop, and I watch her fingers fly over the keyboard.

“I have the Volkov syndicate men’s bios. Are you ready to play Bratva Tinder and swipe on the one that appeals to you?”

“Sure.” I feel nervous laughter erupt. “I’m sure it won’t be the strangest thing I do this week.”

“Not by a long shot.”

We move closer as she brings up the first picture, and I wonder if Yuri might not be the best choice despite the complications.

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Yuri

As I walk toward Lina’s apartment, I reaffirm my decision and know that I am the best candidate.

Nodding to the bratokthat’s guarding the door, I knock twice. Two minutes pass without a response, and I knock again.

“She’s inside. The Vor’s wife left an hour ago.”

“Thanks, Fedor.” The door swings open, and I hold up a bag. “Chocolate ice cream.”

“Thank you.” She snatches it and peers inside. “Yum. You even got the Hagen Daz with crunchy layers.”

I glance at Fedor and notice he’s biting back a smile. “Stay vigilant. Or I will replace you.”

“Of course.”
