“Yes,” she breathed, not looking away from his eyes.

“Yeah?” he smiled softly. “I’ve got some time and…”

“I do too,” she confessed. “I was just thinking today that I wanted to get away and was thinking of home.”

“Let me take you there then,” he urged softly. “Let’s go on an adventure together. There is a place in East Texas that has a bunch of airmen – and we’d have access to a private plane. I could fly us to Wichita Falls or wherever you want to go…”

“Really?”

“Say the word and consider it done,” he breathed and withdrew slightly, smiling nervously. “As friends.”

“Of course,” she nodded, pulling back slightly. “Do you want the cream soda?” she asked, taking a quick sip again and passing it through as he took a bite of the pecan pie.

“Mmmm,” he groaned. “I have such a sweet tooth and love pecan pie. Have you ever had possum pie?”

“Ugh, that sounds disgusting,” she laughed. “Tell me it’s not made with possum.”

“Nope, but it’s got a pecan shortbread crust, and this tastes kinda like this. Possum pie has chocolate and cream cheese in it, too.”

“But no possum?”

“No possum,” he smiled and handed her the tiny pie, letting go of her hand for a moment so they could switch treats… before reaching for her hand, clasping it again quickly. They traded twice more, finishing both tiny treats, and continued talking between bites.

“So, you have some dates you could take leave?” she began, feeling her heart beating nervously. She was actually going on a vacation with a guy – someone that she was only getting to know?

… And she couldn’t be more thrilled!

“Yes,” he scrambled, digging in his shoe to pull out a slip of paper. “Sorry, no pockets.”

“I get it,” she laughed softly and saw his shy smile as he handed it to her.

“Just circle whatever you get approved for-and I’ll put in for the same timeframe. I’ll book our flights, too.”

She nodded. “I’ll get the hotel rooms.”

“Not necessary,” Austin smiled. “My friends? They have a place for us to stay so we don’t have any additional cost.”

“Really? That’s fantastic… and I’m pretty sure my parents would let us stay with them. They turned our bedrooms into guest rooms, so whenever any of us come, we have a place to sleep.”

“Sounds like I’m meeting your parents,” he murmured and smiled at her. “Does this mean that I can perhaps take you to dinner… for a proper date?”

Giselle looked at him, her eyes searching his, and stepped forward towards the fence – at the same time he did. They stood there, holding each other’s hand awkwardly through the chain link, and time seemed to stand still as they both ignored the sound of the PA speakers in the distance announcing ‘lights out’ in ten minutes.

“You want us to go on an actual date?”

“Very much so,” he breathed softly, his dark eyes holding hers. “Do you mind? Does that make it weird since I just asked you to fly away with me?”

“No,” she chuckled, hating that she was feeling so relieved and emotional in that moment. “Not at all. I would love to go out with you, Austin.”

“Let’s pretend for a week we are a normal couple, no fences, no clearing things with the boss… it would be just you and me, going halfway across the world on an adventure together.”

“Knight and paladin in a far-off land?” she teased thickly.

“A quest,” he smiled tenderly. “Remember our story? This will only enhance it – and we should probably go, so neither of us gets in trouble.”

She laughed softly, touched at the ideas he was putting in her head, and nodded.

“I’ll let you know as quickly as possible what I get approved. It would probably be faster to email you the dates.”
