Clicking reply, she began typing… and it seemed to take forever to respond because she was reading and re-reading each response, looking for loopholes.

Austin,

My selections?

Oh, I’m a very simple person and pretty easy-going. I don’t have a lot of favorites, probably very mundane, too. I mean, I find medical stuff fascinating, so I guess you could call me boring? I read medical updates for fun and to keep up with changes.

Let’s see…

Chocolate – but gooey caramel is good. I had a sister that used to work at McDonalds in high school and she would give me both flavors on a sundae. Best-stuff-ever!

Marching band… I play euphonium. No sports here.

V-Dub-love all the way – it’s a culture. My diesel Beetle is in storage at my parents’ house. They start it every once in a while and drive her at least once a month for me. I should sell her because I don’t know when I’ll get back… but she’s my baby.

Okay – I’m guessing you are from Texas? --- Very much so, ARRRRKansas fella! Wichita Falls, Texas – born and bred.

Hot dogs… I don’t do hamburgers. Blech.

Mustard potato salad… I understand about the request for macaroni salad. I’m not a ‘chip’ person and French fries can be soggy or very overrated. I like a good tangy mustard potato salad and can disgrace myself on it at picnics.

Dr. Pepper… All. The. Way.

(Amen, buddy… there’s nothing better!)

If you could go anywhere in the world – where would it be?

Wow.

I’m really not sure what to say to your comments about meeting at a café? It’s terribly sweet, but isn’t that a bit fast? I mean, we are strangers just now chatting and this implies meeting, building a deep friendship, or something else.

Besides, why ruin a good thing? Right?

I’m shy and this is easier for me – and we can’t discuss locations, so who knows where the other is? I don’t plan on traveling anytime soon… and well, yeah, a tremendously sweet idea. I wish there was another time, or place, where it was feasible.

How about we go back to the mental/email thing, my knight? If I was a true paladin, I would look for some place magical… maybe an oasis. Water, trees, a paradise like in the books – and what if there are ruins of a castle nearby? Dreaming of a time that knights and such roamed the earth.

What if it was like in the renaissance paintings?

What if there was a moat or some obstacle that had to be traversed to get to where the damsel was? Perhaps in those written dreams, we could canoe across a silent, still lake, observe the fog touching the water, and wish for magical places instead of lingering in this reality.

Maybe there are fairies, sprites, unicorns, and magical mists that cover the land, giving it an ethereal look? See – so much easier to dream and imagine a world away from here. Let’s not focus on reality but hover in our imaginations… It’s so much more welcoming and easier on the soul.

Your friend and paladin on this journey,

Giselle

Her heart hurtingand soul heavy, she didn’t hit reply to the third email. Instead, she hesitated… and deleted the email, before logging off and leaving the clinic.

She went back to her bunk and got out a change of clothes, needing some solitude and peace of mind that she didn’t just ruin the single bright flicker of joy that had touched her in months… and suddenly feeling lost.

Donning her shorts and yanking a t-shirt over her head, she slipped on her sneakers and went for a run. There was a straightforward path along the fence line, and the sun was finally starting to lower on the horizon.

She could hear the men in the distance talking as they walked towards the exchange, saw others also jogging along the trail through sand and rock… and tried to lose herself in the simplicity of the motion.

One foot in front of the other.
