“I’m paired with a big dummy for Professor Richards’ group work, so would you mind if we swapped pairs?”

I hear footsteps right behind me. I can imagine Tucker rolling his eyes and holding back from killing me.

The student in front of me shrugs, almost agreeing with me.

“Who’s the dead weight?” he asks me. “I can take care of him if you want.”

The footsteps stop right next to me. The two guys look up at Tucker without understanding. His jaw clenched, he crossed his arms over his chest. “It’s me, the dead weight,” he announces in a hoarse voice.

Understanding who he is talking to, the student loses his confidence and stares at me, looking sorry. I understand that he is about to say no to me. I then call him out before he does.

“Is it okay?”

He stares at my face then at Tucker, who seems to be patiently waiting for the guy to open his mouth so he can pin him to the wall. “I…I don’t know.”

Tucker leans toward him. “Do you want to settle the score with me?”

The student shakes his head without answering as Tucker’s muscles tense a little more. “I can’t help you,” he announces hastily as he and his buddy walk away.

“That’s not cool, man!” I shout behind his back.

I turn angrily to Tucker, who seems to be slowly relaxing. “What’s your problem? Why was he scared?”

Just because he’s the king of the campus or even the world doesn’t mean he has to come and mess with me!

He shrugs his shoulders with a falsely innocent look. “I don’t know, maybe he was afraid of your T-shirt.”

I glare at him a little more as he takes another step toward me. His chest is almost touching my chest. My breathing slows down, and I stare at him without flinching. His eyes land on the tag above my chest. He puts a finger on it and pulls it between his index finger and thumb. I don’t move an inch. My brain commands my knee to rise up and hit his family jewels, but my body doesn’t obey. At that moment, what I should do is the exact opposite of what I want to do.

“Unless…” Tucker gasps. “Unless it’s you who’s afraid to work with me?”

His fingers let go of my label but stay on my T-shirt. They slowly move down. I grab his wrist fiercely as his hand comes to rest over my right breast.

“Why should I be afraid?”

His gaze meets mine. and I know we are thinking the same thing. Namely, my body pressed against a rotting tree trunk as his rubs against me and I pull his hair.

“Because you want me between your legs,” Tucker suggests in a husky voice.

I don’t contradict him, because that wouldn’t be believable. I’m pretty sure he can see what I’m feeling through my eyes, like an open book. But noticing his tense features, I whisper back, “I think you want this even more than I do.”

And he doesn’t contradict me either. Instead, he puts his mouth on mine. Firmly. Just for a second, before pulling away from my body without a glance. A furious kiss, just to punish me.

My lips are stiff, but I don’t move away.

What the hell just happened?!

“Will we go to Rocky Mountain when I come to Denver?” Agnes asks me over the phone.

“If you want,” I sigh as I head inside. I quickly get rid of my sandals and my bag, which falls to the ground, and throw my car keys on the hallway cabinet.

“And we’ll go to Six Flags Elitch Gardens too?” she shouts in an excited voice.

I hastily pull my cell phone away to keep my eardrum from bursting while holding back a curse. I’m not going to insult a kid, especially not my little sister whom I love more than anything—except when I want to kill her.

“Yes, yes, whatever you want.”
