“I…Yeah. I was absent earlier, but I heard you gave an assignment due in three weeks. I would just like to know if there is another person who is alone as well, so I can pair up with that person.”

She doesn’t seem to be listening to the words coming out of my mouth. She puts her manicured hand on her hip and tilts her head to the side:

“Why weren’t you in my class?”

My lips open and then close again.

“You are Miss…?” she continues.

“Foster. Iris Foster. I’m so sorry, I…”

She sighs softly and pulls out several sheets of paper from her pocket. “Miss Foster,” she begins, looking for my name on the sheets, “if you’re not interested in my class, you simply shouldn’t have enrolled. The least you can do is attend.”

“I am interested in your class,” I immediately say. “I was stuck on the road behind an unconscious motorist who was driving at fifteen miles an hour.”

But why am I telling her about my life? She looks up at me for a few seconds and to my surprise, a small smile comes to her face. “Ah, Miss Foster,” she finally says, finding my name in the list, before frowning. “You already have a partner, he has his name next to yours.”

“What? No, I…that’s impossible.”

She hands me the sheet, before taking it back a few moments later.

“Don’t waste my time again,” she orders me, walking away as I stand still, my fists clenched.

You bastard.

That idiot Tucker wrote his name next to mine.

Part of me isn’t even surprised. I should have expected it, I know he’s not going to let me go. I got his damn ribbon, took it back to TJ andbasta. I made it clear to him that even though I won the event, I was done and he should leave me alone. Which he didn’t do.

Okay, my mouth almost swallowed Tucker’s tongue this weekend, but I’m not stupid, I’ve realized that this game is not for me. I’m not ready to play by rules I know nothing about. So, despite the effect it had on my traitorous body, it’s up to me to control my brain so that it’s not attracted to that fool.

With a sudden determination, I step off the dais, and as I begin to walk up the steps out of the lecture hall from the top door, my foot stops on the first one.

Tucker is sitting on the very top row, right next to the exit. Both of his feet are resting casually on another seat as he watches me patiently, his eyes laughing.

I straighten my chin defiantly and climb the steps, ignoring his damn gaze as it scans my figure. He looks proud of his little trick. He’s just stuck me with him for a damn assignment and seems to be delighted.

“So…partner?” he asks as he places his black cap backwards on his head.

I decide not to bother with him and walk by his seat without giving him a glance. I raise my middle finger in his direction as I walk away. A small male laugh answers me, way too close.

I walk out of the lecture hall and slam the door behind me. Hopefully, he took the door to his face.

A few students from my class are still standing in front of the entrance, talking to each other.

“Iris.”

I hear his deep voice slamming into my back, but I ignore it again as an idea suddenly occurs to me. “In times of hardship you have to make the best of things,” I repeat to myself as I walk towards two guys leaning against the wall next to me.

“Hi,” I exclaim.

I feel Tucker’s eyes burning into the back of my neck but I try to ignore them.

“Hi,” one of them smiles back at me.

I decide that he will be the instrument of my revenge. “Would you do me a favor?” I ask him, biting my lower lip with an innocent look.

He nods cautiously.
