“Alright, I’ll go. You’ll be here when I get back?” She might need someone to put her back together again.

“Of course. You go get your girl.”

Tabitha went to the car and gave Jack the address. Tabitha was more nervous than she had let on to Julie and half-hoped that they would never get there. However, all too soon, they arrived at JK’s house.

Tabitha took a deep breath and marched up to the door. She rang the bell and waited. No answer.

She knocked on the door, but there was no response to that either. Tabitha saw that there was a peephole and wondered if JK was looking through it, seeing her and ignoring her.

“JK, let me in. I’m not leaving until you do. Come on, JK! Like it or not, you’re going to talk to me.” Tabitha banged on the door, but there was still no response.

Well, she wasn’t going to give up that easily. No way was she going back and reporting to Julie that she had left after a mere few minutes. So, she kept knocking and ringing until her fist was sore, but she didn’t give up.

“Tab, what are you doing here?”

Tabitha spun around to see JK behind her.

Well, now she felt stupid. JK hadn’t been home the whole time. Of course, she couldn’t have expected JK to turn into a hermit like she had. JK had probably moved on with her life. “I need to talk to you.”

“I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.”

“Good idea or not, we still need to talk.”

JK took a measure of Tabitha’s determined expression before sighing and opening the door. “Come in, then.”

JK didn’t offer her a refreshment, showing her directly to the living room. “What can I do for you, Tabitha?”

Tabitha hated how formal her voice sounded. She remembered how JK’s voice usually sounded laden with passion and tenderness and felt a lump rising in her throat as she realized just how badly things had gone between them.

“I have something to say, and I need you to listen. I know you’re not willing to fight for us, but you’re not the only one in this relationship. I’m here to say that I’m willing to fight for you, J—for us. I’m not going to give up on you, even if you seem to have given up already.”

“Tab, we can’t—”

“Tell me you don’t want me,” Tabitha challenged. “Tell me you don’t love me, and I swear I’ll leave you alone.”

JK hesitated. “It’s not that simple. There are other factors involved.”

“It is that simple, actually. When two people truly want to be together, when they truly love each other, they face any challenges that life hands them together. Until you tell me that you don’t want me, I’m not leaving the U.S. and I’m not moving on. I’ll wait for you, J, however long it takes.”

“You can’t do that, Tab. You know you can’t. You have a life to get back to.”

“This is my life and I will choose how I want to live it.”

JK looked on the verge of tears. “I’m not worth all this, Tab. You’re a princess. You can’t give up everything for me.”

“I will choose what I do and don’t want to give up, and you can’t stop me. You can control whether you want to be together or not, but you can’t control my actions outside of that.”

“Tab, please…”

“That’s all I have to say. Now, it’s your turn, J. Are you willing to try with me? Am I worth fighting for to you?”

JK hesitated for a long moment, leaving Tabitha on tenterhooks, knowing that her entire future would depend on this answer.

“I can’t,” JK whispered.

Just like that, Tabitha’s heart broke.
