“You’re looking at this all wrong, Tabitha. From everything you’ve described, it doesn’t sound like J doesn’t care for you. She’s just scared—scared that being with her will hurt you and you will lose everything. So, she’s not willing to fight, not when she fears you may be a casualty in that battle. Butyoucan still fight. Every relationship has two sides to it. She may not be fighting for you because she just wants to protect you, but you’re not fighting for her, either.”

“I don’t know how! I’ve called and texted, but she doesn’t want to talk to me, Julie.”

“So go to her.Makeher talk to you. Show her that you’re not afraid to incur your mother’s wrath. You can’t give up on true love, Tabitha. It’s too rare and beautiful a thing to be thrown aside.”

“Do you really think it’ll make a difference?”

“I think that if you don’t try, you have no chance whatsoever.”

“I’m worried she’ll just reject me again. I don’t know if my heart can take that.”

“Sometimes, you have to take a risk. You might get hurt. But you’re hurting now. Honestly, how much worse can it get?”

Julie had a good point there. “Okay. Okay, I’ll do it.”

“That’s my girl. You’re a fighter, Tabitha. It’s not like you to give up. You were knocked down for a while, but you’ll always find your feet again.”

Tabitha pulled Julie into another hug. “Thank you, Julie. Only a true friend would stand up for—and to—me like this.”

Tabitha still didn’t know how many of her friends back home were simply in it for the money, but today had proven one thing for sure. Julie truly cared for her, and Tabitha could count on Julie to be there through good times and bad. That kind of friendship had to be almost as rare as true love, and Tabitha intended to hold onto it.

“I don’t know where she lives,” Tabitha admitted.

“So call the agency she comes from.”

“I doubt they will just give out the addresses of their employees.”

“Perhaps not, but it’s worth a try. If you don’t have any luck there, you can always hire a private investigator.”

That seemed sensible. JK couldn’t be that hard to find. Tabitha looked up the number for JK’s agency and made the call.

“Hello, Gray Reilly speaking.”

“Hi, Gray, this is Tabitha. Princess Tabitha.”

“Oh… uh… Your Majesty! What can I do for you?”

“I need JK’s home address.”

“Of course. Do you have a pen handy?”

Tabitha was so surprised that she was momentarily struck speechless. She had expected to have to beg, or at least justify why she wanted to know where JK lived.

“Aren’t you going to ask why I want the address of one of your employees?”

“I think I have a fairly good idea. JK… Well, I know she loves you and I know she hasn’t been herself lately, to say the least. I think you visiting would be good for her. Rest assured, I don’t usually just go handing out the addresses of the people who work for me.”

“That’s good to know. Thanks, Gray.”

Julie handed Tabitha a pen and paper, and Tabitha jotted down the address Gray gave her before thanking her and hanging up.

“Great! I’ll see you in a few hours, then.”

“Wait, now? I have no idea what to say!”

“Just tell her the truth. You can’t do anything more than that.”

Tabitha would have liked more time to prepare, but perhaps that was just her making excuses to delay something she was dreading. She wasn’t convinced this would go at all well, considering the responses her texts had received so far.
