He’d given me his word before he walked into the interrogation room, and I trusted him to honor his word.

I let out a frustrated sigh and released my hold on him, turning around and moving across the room.

I couldn’t begin to wrap my head around all that I was feeling, and now I was here at the police station, essentially assaulting an officer. At that point, I was grateful for the relationship that Harper Security Ops had with the Steel Ridge Police Department, or it was likely that I’d wind up with far more problems than just the emotional turmoil over everything.

There was the surprise that Hanna was even connected to this case to begin with, her being brought in for questioning, and what had happened mere moments ago.

She ended things between us.

She believed I’d betrayed her.

While I could understand what would have given her that impression, the simple fact remained that she should have known better. To think that she believed what we had between us was all just a lie. How could she have even thought that I’d been pretending the whole time? Didn’t she feel anything?

I couldn’t comprehend how she didn’t even feel a fraction of what I did between us.

And I regret ever opening my heart up to you.

Fuck.

Those words replayed over and over in my mind. Did she really mean them?

“You want to tell me what’s going on?” Brock asked.

I dragged my fingers through my hair, turned around, and sighed. “What happened in that room with her?”

Shaking his head, Brock assured me, “We just asked her some questions. Trust me, Leo, I would have rather we waited to go pick her up, but with all that pressure coming down on us, when there was that one small connection, we had to run with it.”

“She isn’t responsible for this,” I told him.

Brock’s feet carried him across the room until he came to a stop in front of his desk. He crossed his arms over his chest as his feet mimicked the movement at his ankles.

“I wouldn’t be so quick to question you, but this one feels different to me,” he started. “You want to tell me what’s really going on?”

“Considering Hanna believes that I’ve been working on investigating her this whole time, there’s no longer anything going on,” I informed him. “Apparently, she’s decided she can’t trust me. I can’t say I blame her, but this fucking stings.”

He eyed me for several moments before he shared, “I had to ask some questions, but I definitely didn’t push her. We didn’t even keep her here as long as we could have. I couldn’t just walk in and let her go, though.”

“She didn’t do this,” I told him.

There wasn’t an ounce of hesitation when he revealed, “I got that feeling after talking to her. Why do you think I let her go, despite the evidence?”

Part of me wanted to feel relieved that he knew she wasn’t responsible, but the other part of me was focused on something else he said. “Evidence? What evidence?”

“Not only does she have a connection to each of these individuals, but she has the rope,” Brock shared. “I didn’t know about the rope until we got there earlier today, though. One of my officers noticed the rock-climbing wall on her property. He walked over to look at it, and he noticed that it was the same exact rope used in each of these murders.”

Fuck.

I wanted to believe that it was just a coincidence, but I knew better. Someone using the same exact rope that Hanna did at the rock-climbing wall was intentional. My best guess was that someone was looking to frame her.

But why?

Unless I could figure that out, Hanna might not be completely out of the woods, especially if evidence was pointing toward her and there were no other suspects.

“But you believe she doesn’t have anything to do with this, right?” I asked Brock.

“Correct.”

“Why?” I pressed.
