At that moment, it became painfully obvious to me that Leo was a good guy. He was the kind of guy with morals and values, and he was likely the type of man that every mother and father would dream of having their daughter bring home to meet them.

Leo was the opposite of me.

And I was stuck wondering if perhaps his gut instincts helped him just in his professional life or in his personal one, too.

“Well, it all sounds intriguing,” I declared, unsure of what else to say.

He shrugged. “I don’t know. I think there are a few things that I find far more intriguing.”

In an instant, the thoughts I’d had about my colored past had vanished.

Because I was relatively certain that given how Leo was looking at me and the way in which his voice had dipped low, it was entirely possible that he was flirting with me. He made it seem as though he thought I was the fascinating one, and that notion left me utterly speechless.

I didn’t know how to do this.

I didn’t know how to flirt.

I felt the heat creep over my skin, and I wondered if my face had turned bright red.

My eyes darted back and forth frantically as I wracked my brain and tried to think of something to say.

But nothing came to mind.

Nothing.

So, I did the only thing I could think to do, and I lifted my sandwich to my mouth and bit down.

When I dared to glance at Leo, I found he was watching me with an amused look on his face.

Well, if nothing else, at least I was good at providing him with entertainment.

Speaking of entertainment, Leo went for a change of subject. “So, game nights,” he started. “Is that all that happens in those tiny homes?”

I shook my head. “No. We have movie nights, too. Plus, I’ve got an outdoor activity center. There’s a whole spot in what will ultimately be the center point of the property once I finish having the homes I want constructed built. In that central spot, guests can play. There’s corn hole, a basketball court, a playground for younger kids, and a rock-climbing wall. I’d like to eventually have a community pool put in, too, but I think I still have some time before that gets put in.”

“You’re planning to have more homes built?” Leo asked.

I shrugged. “I’d like to, but I don’t want to be irresponsible with my money, either. So, I’m saving up for each of those. I’d ultimately like to have a dozen of them.”

“Do you already know what you want them to be like?”

At that point, aside from still coming to terms with the fact that I was out to lunch with Leo, and he seemed interested in learning about me, I was mostly able to relax. We’d settled into a conversation that didn’t put any pressure on me, so I found I was able to speak with a bit more ease.

Before I knew it, we had finished lunch and were walking out of the deli. Leo walked with me back to my car, and when we got there, things took an unexpected turn.

“Thanks for joining me for lunch today, Hanna. It was nice talking with you,” he said.

“Yeah, I had a nice time, too. Thanks for inviting me and for buying.”

“It was my pleasure.”

Leo had opened my door for me, and just before I was about to fold into the car, he spoke again. “Hanna?”

I stopped my movements, returned my attention to his face, and replied, “Yeah?”

“Could I have your number? I think I’d really like to get to know you better,” he said.

I swallowed hard.
