“I just called a friend of mine. He runs a security agency,” he said. “He’s sending a few of his men to the house right now. If they get there before us, I told them to keep guard and eliminate anything they don’t like.”

It might seem excessive, but I nodded. I didn’t take any chances with my daughter. But now that was taken care of, I was left to wonder in anxiety. “Who do you think sent that man? Who wants me dead?”

Nick’s lips tightened. “You said the mayor wanted to teach you a lesson.”

I nodded, then my eyes widened. “No. You don’t think he—”

“How far do you think he’ll go?”

“I wouldn’t trust him if I were you,” my mother had said.“I wouldn’t put anything past him. That man is an evil, evil man.”

Oh, god.

Before I knew it, I was frantically calling Carson. Luckily, he picked up instantly.

“This isn’t a good time, Lisa.”

“You bet your fucking ass it’s not,” I snapped, feeling manic. “Is this what you meant by not provoking him? So he wouldn’t try to kill me…his own daughter?”

“Hold on, Lisa. Wait. What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about the fact that someone was hired to kill me,” I yelled hysterically. “And the only person I can think of who wants me dead and has the power and money to do it is your fucking father!”

“Someone tried to kill you?” I heard the shock in his tone. “Are you fucking with me right now?”

“Tell the mayor that he needs to try harder than that. That he won’t get rid of me that easily and I will never ever let him near my daughter. But if it’s a war he wants, then it’s a war he’ll fucking get.”

“Wait.” I heard rustling in the background. “I’m coming over.”

“Don’t bother. I won’t let you in.” And then I hung up.

Rage and panic fought for dominance within me, and the emotion quickly turned into sobs. Without a word, Nick pulled over on the side of the road and single-handedly pulled me onto his lap so I could weep against his chest.

TWENTY-SIX

NICK

I wanted to kill someone.

The murderous rage simmered and threatened to bubble over me as she cried in my arms, every sob chipping at my conscience a little bit. A dark part of me regretted that I’d called the police on Sammy Sharons instead of taking the satisfaction of killing him myself.

Then again, if I had killed him, I never would have found out that someone had put a fucking bounty on her. Someone who was most likely her father.

Jesus.

I’d never been much of a violent man, but at this point, fuck the police. I wanted to kill the mayor myself.

The sobs gradually stopped, and Lisa slowly turned to look at me with reddened eyes.

“Sorry,” she whispered.

“For what?” I tried to keep my voice gentle, but I could still hear the tension in it.

“For breaking down,” she said. “We need to get home, and I’m slowing us down.”

I shook my head, wondering how to explain to her that I just wanted to take care of her, just wanted to be everything to her.

“You have nothing to apologize for,” I reassured her. “Fuck, you’re holding it together exceptionally well.”
