The blood in my veins simmered. Damn, that was hot.

Marissa nudged her mate. “Are you going to let him talk to you like that?”

I peered over my shoulder at Camus who leaned back in his chair, casually sipping his drink as if he knew this confrontation had been coming.

Dorian swallowed hard, placed his glass on the wooden table, and slowly climbed to his feet. “I think it’s high time you understand your place, Fane. And that’s beneath me.”

A laugh erupted out of me, and I slammed my hand over my mouth.

Fane glared at me.“Really? This is serious. He just challenged me.”

“Sorry. I couldn’t help it.”I pressed my lips together to keep the laughter in. Dorian may have taken on a bunch of young vamps—if I believed that heroic tale—but Fane had ripped apart a dozen demons without fully transforming into his wolfish beast.“He’ll be beneath your boot in seconds if he actually tries to fight you.”

Fane’s rough chuckle rolled through my mind, pouring tingles down my back.“I know.”

Marissa stood from the couch and lifted her chin as she stared down her nose at us. “Fane probablydidlet those demons in. He wants to destroy the pack since we kicked him out for being a monstrous mutt.”

The moment Marissa’s words hit the air, a blood-red haze cascaded over my vision, and I lunged for her. My fist connected with her face, and she flew back onto the leather couch.

ChapterTwenty-Nine

Fane cursedand grabbed me before I could jump on the alpha’s daughter and demolish her. “Whoa, Teague. Calm down.” His arms coiled around me like steel rods, pinning me to his chest.

“You little bitch!” Marissa shrieked and climbed to her feet as blood poured out of her swelling lip. “I will rip your throat out. Unlike you, munchkin reject, I can shift.”

“I don’t need to shift to crack every bone in your body.” A growl swallowed up the end of my sentence, surprising even me. The Infernal Sol stirred in my center as I struggled in Fane’s grasp. That sinister power wanted me to reach for it and satisfy the urge for violence brewing in my bloodstream.

Dorian gripped his mate’s arm and drew her back. “You better get your bitch in check, Fane.”

“Call her that again, Dorian.” Fane’s muscles tightened, and the tattoos on his arms trembled as his longing to destroy the beta hit me. “I fucking dare you.”

The color drained from Dorian’s cheeks, but Marissa darted forward and tried to snatch my arm.

A vicious snarl erupted out of Fane, and he spun us, putting his back to Marissa. “Don’t touch her, Ris. I mean it. I won’t be able to keep this little bit of control I’m hanging onto.”

“Are you threatening me?” Marissa scoffed. “I am the alpha’s—”

“Enough, Marissa!” Camus roared, finally standing from his seat. Alpha power poured out of him, forcing Marissa and Dorian to back away and drop to the couch. It didn’t affect Fane or me, though. “Why do you feel the need to poke and prod at Fane? You got what you wanted when you broke your bond, but you become a horrible brat every time he’s here.”

Her mouth dropped. “I can’t believe—”

Camus lifted his hand to shut her up. “I didn’t tell you to speak.” He cracked his neck and shook his head. “He’s picked a mate who doesn’t hesitate to defend him, so I suggest you keep your insults to yourself.”

Oh, hell. He really thought we were mates. We could barely stand each other most of the time. Mates? That was laughable.

And terrifying.

The thought was like a bucket of cold water being dumped over me, and I stopped thrashing in Fane’s arms.

“Finally coming to your damn senses, fiera mika?”He grumbled in my head.

“Shut up.”Wow. That was the best comeback I could think of?

“We should go,” Fane told Camus, still unwilling to release me. “Sorry about the trouble.”

Camus dismissively waved his hand through the air. “We’re wolves. Our emotions often get the better of us.” He ticked his head toward the foyer. “I’ll walk you out.

Fane kept his firm grip as he pushed me toward the door, afraid I’d attack Marissa the moment he let me go.
