We were both so screwed up. Three days after the next full moon couldn’t come fast enough. Hopefully, when we visited Cirilla then, she could tell us how to sever this bond.

“Was anyone able to discover where the zubrek entered pack territory?” I asked. Wolves had been shifting and searching the perimeter of Mohan Wilds to find an entry point.

“No.” Fane rubbed the sexy stubble on his chiseled jaw. “He could have come in near the river, masking his scent.”

“They’re not smart enough to do that.”

He shrugged. “Could just be a coincidence.”

Nothing in this world was a coincidence.

Fane nodded in agreement even though I hadn’t spoken the words out loud or projected them into his mind. Apparently, he just knew what I was thinking now.

I rolled my shoulders to loosen my tight muscles and felt a ghostly hand rub between my shoulder blades. My eyelids fluttered, and I bit back a contented sigh as Fane silently massaged the knots away, walking beside me with a blank face and pretending he wasn’t doing a damn thing.

The morning after that night, soreness wrapped every muscle, and it had nothing to do with killing the sub-demon. Fading bruises had spotted my wrists and arms too, and the bite mark around my tattoo had healed into a deep purple bruise.

It was so obvious what had happened, but neither Ephraim nor Nora ever mentioned it.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips. If only Hawk could see me now. He’d probably think I was disgusting or terrible for liking how animalistic and brutal Fane was to me that night.

Fane’s actual hand landed on my ribs, stopping me as he angled in my direction. “What’s wrong?”

My head jerked back. “Nothing.”

His brow arched, calling me a liar.

The bastard was prying again. I should do the same.

“Tell me about your mom,” I blurted.

His mouth pulled into a scowl. “No.”

“What’s her name?”

“None of your business.”

I tapped my lips. “Peculiar name, but I’ll run with it. What’s she like?”

Fane crossed his arms against his chest, his biceps straining in his black Henley shirt. “Is this because of the other night?” He looked toward the sky and shook his head. “I knew that was a bad idea.”

A laugh burst out of my mouth. “It’s a bad idea every time we get together, yet we keep doing it.”

Fane jammed his fingers through his hair, tugging on the roots. “I need a few minutes alone, or I’m going to turn this forest into a fucking warzone with all the trees I knock down.”

I flicked my hand toward the left. “I’m not stopping you. I can take care of myself.”

His shoulders remained rigid as he stomped away, leaving me alone to patrol. Fine by me. I’d rather not deal with his moody ass anyway.

I continued through our assigned area, not seeing or sensing much of anything except forest animals until after thirty minutes. A scent carried on the wind, and my nose lifted in the air, recognizing an unfamiliar male wolf in the vicinity.

It didn’t take long before he slinked out of the shadows and approached me, his chocolate brown gaze roaming me with disgust.

“You don’t belong here.” The guy flicked dark hair from his face. “You and that monster Fane should just leave—while you still can.”

My fingers curled into fists by my sides as I imagined pummeling him. “Is that so?”

“Yeah.”
