Either Fane really let all of his barriers crumble, or like Cirilla warned, his ability to block me was fading.

I marched into the kitchen and slipped in front of Fane. “You shouldn’t talk about someone’s mother, Marissa. That would earn you a bitch-slap where I’m from. Still might get one even in this nice neighborhood.”

A snarl pulled at her lips, and she pushed off the counter to stand several inches taller than me. “Watch your mouth, munchkin. You can’t talk to me that way. I’m the alpha’s daughter, and my mate will be alpha soon.”

“I don’t give a flying fuck.” I stepped closer until our shoes—my scuffed black military boots and her stylish suede ones—touched. “Say one more nasty word to Fane, and I’ll rip your tongue off and make your soon-to-be-alpha mate eat it.”

Her mouth dropped at the threat, probably unaccustomed to having someone not kiss her ass.

Fane’s fingers hooked in my belt loops, and he yanked me into him as a rough chuckle reverberated through him.“Easy, fiera mika, she’ll try to claw your pretty eyes out.”

“Fiera mika?” My neck craned back to peer at him. The words were in a demon language, but I had no idea what they meant.

Marissa's gasp burst out as she zeroed in on my neck, specifically the tattoo.

“You bit her.” She slowly shook her head. “That’s why your scent is all over her.”

With Fane’s fingers still hooked in my belt loops, he pulled me toward the back door. “Let’s get out of here.”

But when the shock melted from Marissa and a smug smile fell into place, I halted.

“Don’t feel too special, Tate. You’re not.” She casually leaned against the counter again. “Fane andIare fated mates.”

Her words careened into me like a wrecking ball, tearing my hard exterior to pieces. The air fled my lungs, and my knees trembled. I wanted to climb out of my skin.Fated mates.

Fane had a fated mate?

ChapterTwenty-Five

My ears rang, and my thoughts moved at a snail’s pace as I tried to process Marissa’s words. A sick feeling twisted my gut, forcing me to swallow repeatedly to keep from puking.

Fane and Marissa were fated mates.

What aboutourlink? Did it mean anything? Was I just some short-term chick on the side?

I shook my head to disperse the spiraling thoughts. What the hell was I talking about? Fane and I weren’t together. He betrayed me. And I also killed his brother. We could barely stand each other, and we’d start arguing after sharing the same space for more than an hour.

But fated toher?

“Wewerefated mates, Marissa.” Fane’s large hands gripped my hips as he attempted to turn me toward the door, but I wouldn’t budge. “You rejected me and mated with Dorian, permanently breaking our bond.”

Being rejected by your fated mate would have caused Fane all kinds of emotional damage, not to mention it would have turned him into even more of a pariah in the pack. My chest ached as I thought of the storm of anguish roiling in him. No wonder he felt like the loneliest person in the world.

My own anger swelled within me, mixing with the stupid, unwarranted jealousy. “Your loss, Marissa.” My shoulder lifted in a casual shrug when nothing about how I felt was casual. I wanted to rip her fucking throat out. “Actually, I feel sorry for you.”

Marissa scoffed. “Why is that?”

“Now you’re mated to a lesser wolf who will never be able to hold the alpha title or properly please you.” I bared my teeth in a threatening smile. “What will you do when someone stronger rips him off his alpha throne?”

The female wolf lunged, but Fane whirled me around, putting himself between us.

“Touch her, Marissa, and you will know real fear.” His voice dropped so low my bones rattled.

She halted, her mouth falling open at Fane’s threat. Not allowing her another opportunity to fight, he yanked the door open and pushed me outside.

The cool autumn night washed over my heated skin but did nothing to calm the fires raging within me. Jealousy poured through my veins, and it took all my control to keep walking. Fane marched beside me, his body just as tense.

“So, fated mates?” My fists clenched as the urge to go back and slam them into Marissa’s face ravaged my muscles.
