Fane snatched my wrists. “These hands killed my brother.” He flattened my palms on his chest, and his heart beat against them, as wild and untamed as a turbulent sea. “But I still dream, every night, about these hands touching me. Every waking hour I want them on me.”

The tall pines and oaks blurred in the distance, and I lost the ability to think. Hell, I couldn’t even remember how to breathe.

“Warin killed your friends and took that little girl, your only family. You will always see that when you look at me.” Fane shoved his forehead on mine, his warm, cinnamon breath blowing over my face. “But it doesn’t stop you from wanting me, either.”

I wanted to deny it, to say anything, but words utterly failed me. I couldn’t force my mouth to make any sort of protest. They would be lies.

All lies.

Because Fane was right. Despite everything, we couldn’t stop this thing between us from pushing us together. Like an avalanche roaring down a mountainside, the moment it started, there was no stopping it. Even before Fane bit me, one little spark between us at Wrath & Ruin had caught fire, and every encounter since then had stoked those embers hotter until a blazing inferno engulfed us both.

We were always doomed. And we would die in this fire.

But suddenly, I didn’t care.

Fane knew the moment I caved because he was in my head and in my heart, and his lips crashed on mine in a possessive, bruising kiss that sent electricity through every nerve ending. Like Frankenstein’s monster getting struck by lightning, I came alive for the first time in my life.

ChapterForty

I groanedas Fane’s tongue swirled around mine, tasting and drinking me in, and I pressed against him, my hips rocking into his erection. His hands dove into my hair, pulling on the roots and twisting my head so that he could deepen the kiss until—I swear—this man nearly touched my fucking soul.

His phantom hands detached from his body and roamed over me, toying and teasing beneath my clothes. His thumb swirled my nipple while the other stroked my entrance. I shuddered against him, and a whimper slipped out.

I pulled at the button on his jeans and sank my hands down his pants, feeling his hot, pulsating cock. “Fane,” I breathed into his mouth. “Please.”

I didn’t need to elaborate because he already knew. He could feel my hunger as much as I felt his. And I didn’t care if he screwed me on the hood of his car for anyone to see.

But Fane had other plans. He yanked my hands out of his jeans, groaning from the loss of my touch, and picked me up. Trees blurred by as he ran into the forest and then tossed me onto a soft bed of leaves.

“The things I’m going to do to you would get us both arrested.” He bared his teeth. “By the human police and the ravens.”

A fiery thrill hit me right in the gut. “Don’t leave me waiting then. Do your worst, Maverick.”

He yanked his shirt off, giving me a titillating view of his bare torso marked in ink and scars. The setting sun bathed him in a golden glow, contrasting with his harsh beauty and making him appear more like an avenging angel and less like a dark, dangerous demon. “This won’t be soft or sweet.” He kicked his boots and socks off and stepped closer until his feet touched mine. “Or gentle.”

“You know I don’t want anything soft, sweet, or gentle.” I wanted him exactly how he was—vicious, brutal, and savage. I leaned forward, wrapped my hands around his calves, and yanked.

Fane fell on top of me and caught himself on his hands, planting them beside my head. “You sure?”

“That’s not who I am, and I don’t want to pretend that it is anymore.” My legs wrapped around his waist, and our hips rocked together, stealing a sharp gasp from me. “I don’t want to be a lie anymore.”

I’d been lying about who I was for years. And I was so tired of it. The guilt for Jayla’s and my friends’ death would always be there, but why should I feel ashamed of who I was or what I wanted?

His eyes softened, and he brushed his lips against mine. “Okay then. But I did warn you.” A wicked grin pulled at his mouth right before it crashed back to mine.

The kiss was as ruthless as before, but something else was hidden within the brutal depths.

Fane’s surrender.

Like me, he’d had enough of constantly fighting this bond. He let go, and we both soared down river rapids, most likely approaching a deadly waterfall.

And when we did fall, the world better be prepared for the destruction we’d cause together.

Fane’s hands slipped under my back to tear my shirt off, and he didn’t waste any time unhooking my bra and tossing it into the bushes. His bare chest against mine sent a wave of pleasure through me, and I arched into him, grinding my core against his hard length.

He pulled back, dropping kisses down my neck and collarbone as his midnight hair tickled me. My fingers traced the scars on his back while I breathed in his intoxicating scent, drowning in him. His tongue circled my nipple and teeth nipped, drawing a cry from me. Fane’s low chuckle vibrated my belly as he continued to work his way down to the top of my pants.

“I’m going to enjoy every minute of this, Teague.” He flicked my button open, tugged my pants off, and yanked my boots free with them. The beast of a man didn’t hesitate to drag my damp underwear off, tossing the flimsy material aside.
