My blood heated and bubbled at how she regarded Fane like he was dirt on the bottom of her shoe. “Shut your fucking mouth before I shut it for you.”

Marissa cocked her head as her attention swiveled to me. “What are you going to do about it? You can’t even properly shift. You’re almost as bad as him.” Her wild laughter echoed against the walls. “Of course Fane would make a defective shifter.”

Crimson poured over my vision, not for her insult to me being defective—I was—but because she blamed it on Fane.

I ducked under his arm before he could catch me and shoved Marissa across the room. A screech tore out of her as she hit the ground, her claws digging gouges into the hardwoods.

Amelia stood and turned to leave the table until Camus snapped his jaws in her direction.

“Sit down, Amelia. This is not your fight.”

Her top lip curled as she released a growl. “This is outrageous, Camus.”

The alpha’s canines grew, and fur sprouted on his arms and hands as his eyes burned gold. “Do as I say, Amelia, or I will force you.”

Her cheeks paled, and she finally lowered to her seat, her head remaining down as if an invisible force kept her from lifting it.

Marissa scrambled up and lunged forward, but Fane stood in front of me to block her attack.

“Don’t even think of touching Teague.” His muscles twitched as his beastly form longed to emerge.

A vein pulsed in her forehead as she flung ebony locks out of her face, a golden sheen brightening her irises. “You and I will never be over, Fane.”

I scoffed. “I’m pretty sure he’s made it clear that it’s been over for a while.”

“Fane and I were destined, Tate,” Marissa said. “Broken or not, he will always want me, and no other mate will compare.”

“What the fuck, Marissa?” Dorian’s blue glare seared the back of her head, but she didn’t seem to notice or care. “Screw this. I’m gone.” He stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

Marissa gave a twisted smile when she saw the seed of doubt take hold in me. “If it came to it, he would choose me over you. Always.”

“Stop, Marissa!” Camus’s command had his daughter freezing in place. Still partly transformed with long canines, gold eyes, and black fur that now stretched up to his neck, he marched across the room and snatched Marissa’s arm. “Tate and Fane, you’re free to go. We have a lot of pack matters to discuss.”

Fane gripped my hand and towed me out of the room. My head spun as Marissa’s words played on repeat in my mind, making my pulse rise and chest constrict. She and Fane would forever be connected. Would he really go back to her if given the chance?

Once we made it to Camus’s living room, I yanked my hand out of Fane’s. He spun, scrutinizing me.

“You know what Marissa said is complete bullshit, Teague. There is nothing left between us.”

Unable to meet his gaze, I stared at the polished wood floor. Was this really happening? Had I let this guy so far in that I couldn’t get him out even when I knew his heart probably belonged to another?

Marissa was his fucking fated, and the universe paired them for a reason. No other bond or link would top that.

Certainly not ours.

We couldn’t even stand each other most of the time. The other times… maybe they were only flukes in a long stretch of fights.

When I wouldn’t look at him, Fane gripped my chin and forced my face toward his.

“Marissa was lying.”

I shoved his hand away. “Whatever. Like I care.”

Fane’s eyes narrowed as he watched me pick up my armor and wrap myself in it so tightly that nothing would get through. “Yeah, you don’t care.” The emotion vanished from his voice, turning it flat and cold. “It doesn’t matter anyway. We’re going to find a way to cut this fucking bond.”

His walls slid into place, shielding him and his emotions like a fortress made of steel and jagged blades. “I need some time alone to think.”

“Fine,” I called out as he marched away. “We could both use some time alone.” But I didn’t need to think about anything. I knew what I had to do.
