“I got back to Savannah a few days ago,” Fane said, pushing his green beans around his plate. “I was visiting a friend.”

I took another bite of my chicken, my gaze bouncing over the table and then the counters, searching for a specific condiment.Damn. No luck.

“What are you looking for?” Fane’s gruff whisper, filled with thinly veiled anger, pulled my attention away from the center island.

My lips pursed. “Hot sauce.”

“Oh, we have some, honey.” Nora began to rise.

“I got it!” Preston bolted from his chair and scurried to a cabinet, pulling out some Tabasco sauce. “So you like a little spice, huh?” He set the bottle in front of me, wiggling his eyebrows.

A rumble vibrated through Fane’s chest, so low only I heard it.

I snatched my favorite condiment and twisted the cap off, drowning my chicken in orange liquid. “You could say that.” A severe understatement.

Dylan whistled. “Your mouth is going to be on fire.”

“Nah. I’m used to it.” I dug into my chicken leg and savored the dose of spice, unintentionally moaning. After another bite, I wiggled in my seat.

Fane watched me, the top of his lip twitching as if he either wanted to scowl or smile. “Happy?”

I nodded, not even caring that I had hot sauce all over my mouth. As a kid, I’d had plenty of peanut butter sandwiches, canned crap, and bland, tasteless trash. So when I discovered spicy food, I devoured it with a zeal most couldn’t match.

“I’ll give it a try.” Preston grabbed the bottle and dumped some on his chicken. “I can handle a lot of heat.”

Fane shook his head and muttered under his breath. “You’re going to regret that.”

Preston took one bite. “Oh, my God.” He coughed and grabbed his tea, chugging it.

Nora’s laugh resonated through the kitchen, mingling with her husband’s. “What did you think would happen? You covered your chicken in hot sauce.”

He pointed at me. “So did she, and she’s fine.”

“She’s psychotic,” Fane said, flashing a mocking smile in my direction. “And enjoys pain.”

My eyes narrowed. “You’re one to talk, Maverick.” I wiped a droplet of hot sauce from my plate with my middle finger and stuck it in my mouth, glaring at him while covertly flipping him off.

Childish, I know.

The sauce pleasantly sizzled on my tongue. Maybe Ididlike pain just a little.

As I slipped my finger from my mouth, Fane’s stare bored into me with enough heat that fire spread over my skin. He licked his lips and leaned in my direction, taking a deep breath. A barely noticeable shiver rippled over him.

And then he turned back to his plate as if the moment never happened.

What the ever-loving hell was that?

Nora and Ephraim watched the two of us with grins. Ugh. They still thought Fane bit me because he wanted me to be his mate. Little did they know he only did it so I wouldn’t die until he dug the Infernal Sol out of me.

“How did you two meet?” Nora motioned her fork between us.

Fane shrugged. “Wrath & Ruin.”

“I heard that place is awesome.” Dylan enthusiastically stabbed his green beans. “I can’t wait to go there when I’m eighteen.”

Nora pierced her oldest son with a glare, her irises the color of oak leaves in the spring. “Your brother can take you since he seems to be a regular there. The employees know him well.”

Crimson spread into Preston’s face. “I got kicked out one time. And like I said, I didnotpick a fight with that vamp. He started it.”
