His silky laughter followed me over the loud music blaring through the club, and his gaze burned into my back all the way to the table Hawk, Roxie, and I had been at earlier. My heart tapped out a frantic beat, and my limbs trembled from my encounter with the high demon lord.

I wanted to get the fuck out of here. Now. But there was no sign of Hawk or Roxie. Was he still trying to coax her out of the party room?

“If you’re looking for Hawk, you’re too late.” Kourtney leaned against the other side of the table, smirking like a cat that just caught the canary. “He’s already found someone better to occupy his time.” She jerked her thumb toward the black curtains hiding the mysterious room.

A yawning pit tore open in my gut as images of Hawk with another girl bombarded my mind. “You’re so full of shit.”

Her laugh scraped against my eardrums. “Go see for yourself, Teague.” She used the mixing straw to slowly stir her cocktail. “Like I said, Hawk doesn’t dumpster dive.”

I stormed by her, biting back the urge to rearrange her pretty face. The demon standing guard in front of the private room crossed his meaty arms covered in snake and dragon tattoos.

“Can I help you?” His magenta mohawk didn’t move as he spoke.

I jerked my chin toward the curtain. “I want to go in.”

As he slowly examined me, a smile melted across his pierced lips. “You sure about that, Strawberry?”

For fuck’s sake. If I had a penny for every time someone commented on my hair, I’d be filthy rich.

“I’m sure.”

With a grin that had chills pouring down my spine, the demon bouncer lifted the velvet rope from the stanchion and motioned toward the shimmery curtain. “Have a fun time, Strawberry.”

ChapterSeven

I drewmy shoulders back and marched through the silky material into a room much dimmer than the club. Thick clouds of smoke drifted through the air, further shrouding everything until only a few feet of visibility existed in either direction.

The curtain brushed my bare back, and I flinched, thinking it had been a hand. I stepped forward, bumping into a leather couch. A young, twenty-something guy rested his head in a female demon’s lap as she dropped a silvery liquid onto his tongue. He moaned, and a sleepy smile pulled at his lips.

Rapture.

The demon ran her hand over his scalp, massaging and raking her nails through his hair. The human’s gaze lifted—his pupils so blown out they nearly covered the entirety of his green irises—and he curled his fingers in my direction, asking me to join.

Not a fucking chance.

I stomped away, almost running into a glass coffee table where a few silver vials littered the glossy surface. How was I supposed to find Hawk or Roxie when I couldn’t see shit? Kourtney could have lied. Maybe they were outside looking for me while I stumbled around in this nightworlder-infested drug den.

Lust permeated the room, so thick it pressed against my skin. Music pumped through speakers, slow, electronic melodies spinning a sensual vibe like a spider creating a web to trap prey. A dribble of sweat ran down my nape, and I plucked at my shirt as it stuck to my frame. Why was it so hot back here?

My muscles stiffened as my body protested venturing deeper into the room. Captain Coltrane wouldn’t be happy with ravens exploring this part of Wrath & Ruin, especially her nephew. My throat tightened as I pictured her disappointed expression if she found out I let him go back here to find Roxie. As partners, I should be watching his back. That also meant keeping his ass out of trouble, and I just let him wander in here without me.

“Hey, beautiful. Looking for a little something to make you feel delicious?”

I jerked away from the warm breath blowing down my cheek and angled toward a lanky demon with tousled fuchsia hair and a dangerous smile. “No thanks.”

“You sure? You look like you might need something to take the edge off.” He reached forward and stroked a finger down my bare abs.

I smacked his digit away and curled my hands into fists as my face hardened, nostrils flaring. “Don’t. Touch. Me.” Rage bled through my veins, trying to destroy the walls of control I’d carefully constructed over the last two years. The nightworlder hadn’t done anything against the accords so I had no right to end him.

But if he touched me again, I wouldn’t hesitate to put him on his ass. I didn’t give a damn about causing a scene.

He lifted his hands in surrender and gave a nervous chuckle. “My mistake. I thought you were in here to have some fun.” He didn’t realize I was a raven, but his supernatural senses picked up the serious threat I could pose.

“I’m looking for someone.” I pulled my phone out of the little spot in my boot I’d tucked it into and showed him the screensaver, a picture of Hawk and me in the sparring gym. “Have you seen him?”

The demon cautiously stepped forward, his lips pursing. “Uh, yeah.” He motioned to the right. “I saw him walk that way a little while ago. He was searching for someone too.”

A breath of relief tumbled from my lungs. “Thanks.” I didn’t wait for the demon to respond before marching in the direction he pointed, passing through several swirls of lavender-scented smoke.
