“Well… that… they don’t sound like they were very good people,” I say, treading lightly.

Deus pulls something out of his shirt and hands it to Ellison who’s stopped at a red light. “I made your lucky doll a shirt as an apology for upsetting you this afternoon. Since I wasn’t allowed to leave, I just cut a square out of one of Valerie’s shirts when she wasn’t looking.”

“She’s going to kill him,” August announces.

Ellison picks up the little shirt. “Oh… um… thank you.”

Deus smiles. It’s a little more strained than normal but he seems to push that aside and turn his attention back to the road.

“I really like my doll,” August says.

Deus beams at him. “I’m glad!”

“I don’t have one and I’m kind of jealous,” I say.

Deus gasps. “Oh my god… you don’t! I’ll make you one when we get back.”

“Preferably without my dog’s hair involved,” Lex says.

“Landon’s cat doesn’t have any hair, though.”

“You arenotgetting anywhere near my cat with scissors,” I warn Deus.

“I won’t!”

“Well… we’re here,” Ellison says as he pulls off the side of the road near the jail. “Okay, I know we went over the layout and plan already, but Deus, you remember it all?”

“Yep.”

“Okay. Landon and August, there’s a hat and mask that you need to wear to help blend in. Also some glasses to see if that helps. Once Deus is ready, you’ll need to open the door for him.”

“Got it,” I say as I pull the hat, mask, and glasses on before turning to August. “Do I look different enough?”

August lifts the hat and pushes my hair up under it. “I think that helps a little.”

“It’ll have to do,” Ellison says. “Keep in contact with us.”

“Got it.”

August has a fairly recognizable face so he pulls a mask on too, which really isn’t that uncommon when far too many people in the city seem to think they can be self-appointed superheroes. It’s a pain in the ass for people like August, especially when there are actual threats, but it does seem to be helping us now.

Deus immediately goes invisible but puts a hand on my back so I can tell where he is and don’t shut him out. August hurries ahead and opens the door for me to enter and together we walk up to the front desk.

The woman sees our masks and immediately sours. “What can I do for you this evening?”

Since August isn’t a star actor, I take over. “So! My buddy and I are heroes, you know? And we were like… just minding our own business when we totally came across a mugging, you know? And… we wanted to inform our fellow people of the law what went on.”

She whips out a piece of paper. “Fill this out.”

“No, like… we need to talk to someone, you know?”

“Fill this out,” she growls.

“According to code 3582 of hero law thingies,” I start, not rememberingat allthe rest of what Ellison told me (he started reading the whole law to me and it was extremely boring and Zacia did a little stretch that was super cute, so I missed the rest), “I have the right to speak to an officer on staff.”

She grimaces but gives me a curt nod before calling someone to come get us. We wait a good ten minutes before someone comes to the door and opens it. I’m kind of thankful for it because Deus had chosen to sit on my lap and crush my legs while whispering weird things in my ear.

“Come on back,” the officer says. She’s a woman who looks like she was built for dealing with bullshit from idiots. I hold the door open for Deus and follow her back to a group of cubicles in the area. Beyond it is the door that leads to the jail cells where Ned unknowingly awaits our visit. “I would like you to be aware that if this is a waste of my time, I will have both of you arrested.”
