“My arms are pinned under me, Lex, can you get it?” Deus asks.

There’s some struggling but Lex starts patting around as I fight to get my flashlight out by sacrificing August’s throat when I elbow him in it.

“Fuck,” he groans.

“Sorry, love.”

“It’s okay.”

“Hear that, Ellison? August tells Landon it’s okay when he does stuff,” Deus shouts, but Ellison responds by turning the music up even more.

“I’m going to fucking break the seat if someone doesn’t open this soon,” I threaten.

Lex finally finds the tab and he and Deus come rolling out with the seat.

“Oh… right, I forgot to let you guys out,” Ellison says, as if he didn’t continually drown out our pleas.

Once Deus is back in the front seat, August and I climb out and get back into our seats.

“Damn, that was too tight of a space,” I say as Ellison turns the music down.

“This was nothing! When we’re twelve we’re placed in a coffin and buried for two days. It teaches us how to calm our minds and relax our bodies even in the most confined of spaces,” Deus says.

“What the fuck?” Lex breathes.

“Or maybe it gives you mental trauma, what the hell, Deus? Do you realize that literally every story from your childhood is filled with abuse?” I ask.

Deus is quiet for a moment. “Ah well.”

“Ah well?” I ask in disbelief.

“Where the hell did youcome from?” Ellison asks.

Deus turns quiet, which is actually quite rare for him.

“Asmodeus,” Ellison prods.

“Ah, it doesn’t matter. It’s gone anyway.”

“Like they stopped this human torture?” I ask, genuinely curious.

“Ha, yeah, I mean, there was no one left to run it after everyone died, you know? But it’s fine.”

“Oh…” I say, startled. “Did something happen?”

“Um, it’s not a big deal, some… one killed everyone, but it’s fine.”

“I’m sorry, that… must have been hard to deal with,” August says.

“Oh! That’s okay. It was me… who killed them…”

The car turns dead silent as I slowly look over at August who is already staring right at me. Like what the hell is this?

“Anyway. I promise not to kill you guys! Ha ha! Funny, right?” he asks, not sounding overly jovial for once. His voice actually sounds a bit pained.

“I thought you said they still did sacrifices and stuff…” I say.

“I just said that so you’d think I was interesting… they don’t do anything anymore.”
