I could see the corner of her mouth curl up in a smile.

“Guess you know my fantasies. Kind of puts me at a disadvantage. I think the Scorpion has some work to do.”

I threw my head back and laughed. “You’re not going to let that go, are you?”

Brie faced me. “Not until you admit it.”

“You know I can’t do that. It’s called asecretsociety for a reason.”

Brie’s expression grew serious. “How many other girls do you screw?”

I nearly choked on her question. If I answered, it would confirm that I was in the society. If I didn’t, it would hurt her. We’d made too much progress to go backward, but I wasn’t sure I could give her the answer she was looking for.

“Brie, my sex life is a bit complicated.”

“It’s not a difficult question to answer.” Her jaw clenched, one of her tics when she was irritated. “I don’t care about anyone in the past, but moving forward, are you able to commit to just me physically? If not, then I need to know upfront. As you already know, I’m okay with multiple partners. Whoever the other guy I was with was damned good, but if you’re a man whore, then I’m not going to wait around for you to show up at my door for a good fuck.”

Shit. Shit. Shit. She’s pissed and goading me. Step lightly, dude. We’d had a committed relationship conversation minutes ago. Now, I was scrambling backward. At least that’s what she thought, but that wasn’t true.

“Brie, when I told you I was yours, I meant it. I’m not going to fuck anyone else now that we’re together, but there are some things you need to know about me if you intend to stick around. The cult messed me up in a lot of ways.”

“I can accept that. I wanted to know if you would still be a part of the society. Since I found someone else’s invitation, I know there are more girls than just me. As I said, if you want to be with other women, then just tell me.”

Her words said one thing, but the tears in her eyes said another.

“Since the game is away tomorrow, I won’t be able to explain any more until Monday after classes and practice. Can you trust me until then? Can we enjoy each other for a few days?”

Confusion and fear clouded Brie’s expression. “You’re afraid after I learn whatever this is that I’ll not want to be with you?”

Panic spiraled through me. I couldn’t lose her twice. “Yeah. It’s why I haven’t had a serious relationship since you were fourteen and I was fifteen.”

Brie inhaled, pausing before she spoke again. “If you’re taking a chance on telling me, then I’ll take a chance that it won’t scare me off. Focus on winning the game tomorrow, and then maybe we can celebrate together afterward.” She placed her cold hands on my cheeks, then kissed me.

I knew she meant well, but I couldn’t help but think that, once again, our time with each other was limited.

ChapterThirty-Three

Brie

As hard as I tried, I couldn’t sleep after Kane dropped me off at home. My body was tired, but my brain refused to stop spinning on that stupid merry-go-round. I’d learned more about my past through Kane’s pain in a few short days, and it fucked me up.

I sat on the edge of my bed and unlocked my wrist cuff. Even though Kane hadn’t said anything about it, I realized that since he’d been in my house while I was sleeping, he had most likely spotted the chain.

Glancing at the clock, I stretched and yawned. The game was only a few hours away, so I’d at least been able to lay in bed a little longer.

Heading for the shower, I attempted to make sense of what I’d learned about my past. I was born and raised in a cult. A fucking cult. I’d heard about them in general onDatelinewith Mom and Dad, but not enough to really understand alot about it. Kane had mentioned it was a religious one, which meant I could probably ask Google to help me learn more. Maybe that would take some pressure off Kane, too. I felt calmer after realizing I had a major piece to the puzzle and could research independently.

“Holy shit, it’s cold,” Everlee said, jumping in place on the sidelines at the football game.

“Where’s your jacket?” Gabby asked.

“I’ll just turn into a black-and-burgundy popsicle if I wear it, then take it off for cheers.” Everlee blew into her cupped hands.

“I’m sure the guys wouldn’t mind seeing us snuggle up to each other,” I laughed.

“Then they’ll lose the game because they’ll be thinking about the wrong balls,” Gabby said, giggling.
