"There's a very good chance, the recording is very damning, and it's obviously not coerced. Tell me, though, did Andre ago to the hospital after the assault?"

"Yes. The police told her there wasn't sufficient evidence and never followed up on it, Trent has ties to the police through the mayor's office."

"The thing is, if she was strangled then there should be pictures of her neck as well as evidence of defensive wounds and a rape kit."

"Can you find that stuff?" he asked.

"I can have it retrieved from the hospital. If everything checks out, this case looks solid, Mr. Goffman.

"Thank God."

"You did a very brave and reckless thing here, Mr. Goffman."

"I had to."

"I'll do everything I can with the evidence; it looks like we're dealing with potential police corruption as well. This case could be huge."

Daniel was excited to see it going somewhere so quickly, and he knew that Anna would be safe from then on.

At the end of his workday, he called Anna to fill her in on everything he'd spoken to Mrs. Collins about. She was excited to finally have people in power and wanted to hear her story. The idea that Trent would pay for what he did overwhelm her. The fact that she and Ben would be safe and could move on with their lives was such a gift that she couldn't help tearing up again; Daniel had given her back her life.

CHAPTER21

When Daniel left work to pick up Tina, he was content again with life and felt completely at peace. After the drama of dealing with Trent, Daniel just wanted things to go back to normal.

He pulled up in the same spot he always did to wait for Tina and spotted her sitting under a tree next to Carmine. He considered honking to hurry her up, but there was something funny about the scene, so he watched with interest.

As if in a dream, the boy touched his daughter's hair, and she nudged him away playfully. Daniel wondered briefly what it meant, but slowly, she moved closer.

Right there on the school's front lawn, Daniel watched as Tina made the first move and kissed Carmine Russo like it was nothing and then immediately got up and waved goodbye to him. It sent Daniel right back to the first time Candace kissed him, making him smile. Candace had to make the first move with him cause he was shit scared, and until that first kiss, he still couldn't tell if she liked him.

Daniel found that he could finally think of Candace, and it didn't hurt like it used to. Now that he'd given his heart to someone else, he could think of the good moments with Candace and see them as good memories and not ghosts of what he'd lost. Making love to Anna didn't feel like cheating, and he knew he had moved on completely, something he never thought would happen.

Carmine was stunned and sitting on the grass, and Daniel couldn't help chuckling. Tina ran to the truck and hopped in next to him without looking him in the eye, and he grinned at her like the cat was well out of the bag.

"You didn't see that, did you?" she asked sheepishly.

"Afraid so."

"Am I in trouble?"

"Hell no!" he laughed. "How was it?"

"Amazing!"

"I'll take you out for supper, and you can tell me all about it," he chuckled. "I got my own good news in the love department."

"You got Anna back?" she exclaimed.

"You bet I did! I was a little worried there, but apparently she can't live without me," he joked.

"You're the man, Dad!"

Daniel laughed and pulled a U-turn to take his best girl for supper.

"I'm really happy for you, Dad. I know how much she means to you," Tina began after they ordered their usuals.
