She started reading an address.

“Hold on.”

I had to write it down. I walked out to see Maren still fast asleep. I grabbed the pen on the nightstand and returned to the bathroom.

I took down the address on the back of the card with their number on it.

“Anything else?” she asked again.

“I need some protection.”

“There’s someone at the safe house still. He’ll be at your disposal.”

“But your friend just said y’all work alone.”

“The gentleman at the safe house ain’t a member yet, but he’ll do as you wish,” she explained. “Anything else?”

“I need some time. Whatever y’all need from me, jobs or whatever will have to wait.”

“How long?”

“Months at least,” I said, not knowing for sure. “Can I think about it?”

“Fish will meet up with you at that address soon.”

Fish? What a name.

“What am I signing up for?” I asked myself under my breath.

“You’ll find out in person from Fish.”

I bet I would.

“Is that all?” she asked.

“What, for my soul?” I joked. “Is this a onetime thing? Do I get three wishes or something?”

“You want out of your current club, protection for you and yours, and some time before you start a mission. Did I get that correct?”

“Is this a negotiation? Do I get vacation time? What’s the compensation?” I made light of it all. “Do you have a union?”

She actually laughed. “No one said you were funny.”

“Sometimes you just have to laugh.” Especially when things were so shit.

“Anything else?” she asked again.

“You wouldn’t know someone wanting to buy a limited, anniversary edition Harley, would you?”

“That can be arranged. I’ll send a text to this phone.”

“Alright. When?”

“Soon.”

“Alright.”

“Anything else.”
