“You’ve run out of options.” It wasn’t a question.

“Yes,” I said, but it sounded like a whole different word. I sounded defeated. I changed that with my next sentence. “I hear you want me on your team.”

“True,” he said, straightforward.

I hadn’t been sure of that fact. The knowledge built back my confidence. “It’ll cost you. I need help out of my current job, my current situation.”

“What’s wrong with your current job?”

“My boss is a loon.”

“Done,” the voice came back.

“That simple? Hard to believe.”

“Your reputation precedes you. Anything else?”

“I need some protection now. Not for me,” I said, trying.

“Go on,” the man on the line said, sounding impatient.

“Wait. What do you want in return?”

“Loyalty. No matter what patch you wear.”

That confused the hell out of me. “I thought I would patch over to y’all.”

“Eventually. Anything else?”

“Could use a crew,” I started.

“Road Monsters ride alone,” he came back. “The lady on the other line will arrange everything.”

He put me on hold.

The lady’s happy voice returned. “How can I assist you?”

“What do you mean? I just tell you what I need?”

“And I’ll arrange it,” she replied, her voice too chipper.

Okay. I’d play. “I need somewhere to hide out for a spell. I have someone to hide. Maybe more.”

“Where? Where are you going?” she asked.

“Can’t rightly tell that.”

“You need a safe house?” She guessed right.

“Yeah,” I said. “Maybe more than one.”

“Who are you hiding?”

I decided to tell her. “A lady fixin to be my ol’ lady. And hopefully my kids soon.”

“Let’s start with the first one.” She started listing off states.

“Tennessee,” I said, deciding to keep Maren close while I rescued my daughters. “Around Nashville.”
