He put his hand over his full mouth to speak. “I had my gun on you.”

“For a moment. But I could’ve taken you.”

Fuck. I didn’t need my Monster pitying me, being sorry for anything, especially not for having sex with me. I had gone to sleep dreaming of a reunion with him and his monstrous dick.

“Can we not do this, please? I wanted you to fuck me anyway I could get you. You know enough about me to know what I like,” I said.

Levi smiled and nodded. “I know you like it rough and raunchy, your words. But there’s more you’re not telling me.”

“I really don’t think there is. Not anything I want to talk about,” I said, wiping my greasy hands. “That’s going to have to be good enough.”

My words hung between us as we finished eating.

He broke the silence. “You’re pregnant.”

“Yeah,” I rolled my eyes. I had not let myself be genuinely happy about it yet. Happiness threatened to rear its ugly head as I watched his eyes sparkle at the news. “Found out about a month and a half ago. I didn’t think that would ever happen again.”

“About your daughter,” Levi started, ruining my happiness.

“Don’t even go there,” I warned.

Fuck. If I were at my house, I would pop another pill. My daughter died long ago. And she was the very first ghost I ever saw. She came to me as I walked the trapeze. I almost fell to my death that day. I have never been the same since. Levi’s quest for answers threatened to collapse my fragile sanity.

I came as clean as my mental health would allow. “I don’t want to talk about some things. I just can’t. Can’t you respect that I don’t want to relive something for you? Can’t you give me peace?”

He listened intently, taking in my every word.

“I’ve been seeing a therapist,” I admitted, with a serious expression. “Now I’m on medication to keep me from going crazy.”

I felt more than a twinge of sadness as I watched him react. He flinched. For a microsecond, I saw the realization in his eyes. He thought I was nuts, and this only confirmed his suspicions.

“You don’t have to go through this alone,” he said, reaching out to take my hand. “I’ll be here for you, no matter what.” He brought my hand to his lips and put a greasy kiss on it.

I smiled weakly as my eyes filled up with unshed tears.

We talked for the next hour, planning our next move, discussing the best place to hide out. He told me about the man who gave him the file on me. Said Merc could help him. He wanted me to stay with this stranger while he went to try to rescue his daughters.

“If I can’t take the girls out from under them, I’ll try to reason with my brothers,” he said. “If I succeed, I have some money saved up. I can trade off my Harley for a cheaper model. We could head out west, rent a cabin in the woods somewhere. Lie low for a while and wait for things to cool down.”

“Leave the biker life?” I asked him.

“Not for good. For a bit. Let you have this baby in peace.”

“That’d be nice,” I said, meaning it.

He perked up. “Hell, if I could talk Chloe into leaving. She’s threatened to run out on the girls already during this, the one time I got ahold of her. Who knows if she has? If I could get her to run with the girls, it’d be even better. I could get them to her family, who could protect them. I don’t want them to be without their mom.”

I hadn’t forgotten about his wife. They weren’t divorced. Not that it mattered. When Levi spoke of the girls, it meant the two little girls whose daddy was actually an Asphalt God. He beat up the biker who his wife cheated on him with, and they, my club, in turn killed his sister. It started his whole feud with the Gods. Levi had a sixteen-year-old daughter who was his blood. Haven with her fiery red hair like her brute of a mother, Levi’s wife, Chloe, was sweet but a handful.

“What about Haven?” I asked.

“I’d like her to come with us. If she will.”

I nodded.

“If Chloe won’t take the girls to safety, they’ll come too.”

I agreed to that as well.
