That fire spread to my soul. All the love I had for her before threatened to overwhelm me. I tempered it with doubt. I remembered all her secrets. Her lies. I had been fooled before.

My voice rose with frustration. “What’s all this about? The cash you’re delivering?”

“I ain’t even sure. The Gods gave Poison orders before I was in the picture. I planned to find out. That’s why I agreed to come, but now that you’re here,” she interjected. Treasure tore her gaze from me. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

She was talking about what was going to happen between us. I didn’t know if she would leave her club for me. If I could get my girls from my club, I would have to run. Maren could come with us. However, it was wishful thinking. I couldn’t ignore all the questions burning in my mind.

I started with what could be, surprisingly, considered the simplest of them. “What’s this about your ex-boyfriend being in Galveston today?”

Maren about stomped her foot as she pulled away from me. She paced. I could see the hesitation in her eyes as she responded. “I can’t believe Poison told you.” Her face fell. “What about you fucking her?” She shot me a look that could kill.

As if summoned, her friend emerged from the shadows. I could sense the tension between them immediately. Had she heard us?

I looked over my shoulder, searching for her friend’s motorcycle but came up short.

“Is everything okay?” Treasure asked her.

My gaze returned to Poison, and I spotted the glint of a weapon in her hand. I stepped forward, shielding Maren with my body.

“What are you doing? Put the gun down,” I demanded, reaching for Maren’s that had been in my jeans. I had it trained on the bitch in an instant as she rose hers in Maren’s direction.

Her Road Captain sneered. “You’re in too deep, and I ain’t going down with you. I’m turning you into Arkansas. Dick will be a bonus. Sorry Dick. You set my ass on fire, anyway. Doubt I could keep that up.”

I was confused. Looking back at Maren, I watched the blood drain from her face as she realized the extent of the danger, we were in. The Asphalt Gods MC were known for their brutality. I knew that much. Then it dawned on me, Poison had said her ex had come from Arkansas today to ride through. The rest of her gang was supposed to escort him.

That’s when who I could only imagine was her ex-boyfriend stepped out of the shadows. The big guy looked like any ol’ biker with his beard and tattoos. He was handsome enough though I didn’t recognize him. There was nothing to give him and his reputation away. He wasn’t armed. A couple of members from his gang flanked him and had us covered. Bikers from Arkansas or Galveston, I had no clue.

“Beef. You’re my VP. Gimp. You’re supposed to be my Enforcer,” Treasure said, revealing their allegiance.

The biggest one spoke. His patch read Beef. “I won’t serve a woman. Not one who murdered our brother, Killer.”

“Ax. You’re a piece of shit,” she said.

I presumed Ax was her ex.

He snarled, “Spooky, you’re coming with me.” The biker used her old Road Name, confirming it.

Even as Maren produced another weapon, another small revolver, they outnumbered us.

“You are looking mighty fine, as usual. Considering,” he said to her. The he addressed me, “As for you.”

“You’re a dead man,” I interrupted him, taking off my cap.

A flash of recognition showed on their ugly faces when they saw the tentacles on my head. I took advantage of their surprise.

“Fucking bastard,” Beef quipped.

An evil grin grew on my face. My reputation preceded me. I saw the fear in their eyes. They all hesitated. With a steady hand, I aimed at the largest man, Beef, my finger tightening on the trigger. I took my chances while I secured Maren behind me. The shot echoed through the alley, but my bullet hit its mark. The big biker stumbled back, clutching his chest. At the same time, Maren fired, taking out Poison’s leg. Gimp ducked down as Ax ran off. Maren started after him, but I stopped her.

“We have a prisoner who we need to question first,” I said.

She nodded and regrouped in an instant.

We both had our guns at the ready, on Gimp, a lanky biker with long ginger hair.

“This is your Enforcer?” I asked her as Poison screamed in the background.

Maren turned and shot the bitch again, shutting her up before turning back to our task.
