Poison took the hint. She straightened her back, but she still made eyes at me. She said, “Maybe he can ride with us to Houston.”

“Fuck. Is that today?” Maren asked.

Poison huffed. “I knew you’d forget. You’d try to pull out. We can’t. I made a promise in the club’s name that we’d deliver our donation in person.”

“We’re not pulling out. I just might not be able to go myself as planned. Something big, something monstrous has come up,” Maren said.

“If we don’t leave now, we’ll be late,” Poison said. “Everyone else is on a job today, remember?”

“Yeah,” Maren said, touching her finger to her chin. She looked worried about that.

I wondered what the big secret was. Maren was full of them.

Turning to me, she lifted both her shoulders. “It’s better to make ourselves scarce today. How about it, Dick? You man enough to join us today on our run?”

If Maren was leaving Galveston to go anywhere, she better believe I would. I didn’t want her out of my sight. However, I couldn’t just take and run her back to Royal Road either, like I had planned. She and I needed some sort of strategy. I decided to tag along.

I said, “I’d love to. Where are we headed?”

“A book signing,” Poison answered.

“A what?” I asked, blinking.

Maren explained, “Not yet. There’s a large event in Houston called Motorcycles, Mobsters and Mayhem Author Event. It happens in May. Apparently, there’s fiction written about bikers and the mob and such, and this signing will have one hundred or more authors. It will be packed, from what I hear. Reading’s not my thing. But Poison enjoys it.”

Poison took over. “My sister-in-law in Houston is one of the organizers. She helps put together the event every year. It’s never been in Houston before, her hometown. Since they draw such a large crowd, they support several charities. We’re delivering a large donation from the Asphalt Gods MC. Since it was my task to organize and collect it before I transferred here from Houston, I promised her I would deliver it personally today.”

“But you said the signing’s not until May.” I was a bit confused.

“It’s a lot of cash,” Poison said.

Maren gave her a look to let me know something was afoot. “I promised Poison I’d go with her since I appreciate her transferring to my chapter to be my Road Captain. The Gods are big on charity work.”

Poison’s eyes went back. “Got to keep Scar happy. Plus, we need the excuse. We’re looking for someone in Houston.”

Maren made a cutting motion across her neck.

Poison shut up.

Maren said to her, “I’ll go with you and pay my respects to Judy. See what she has planned for the signing, but you can find your friend, alone. Take care of that. I’ll take care of this big dick. I mean Dick.”

Leaving me with her Road Captain, Maren went to dry her hair and get her leathers on. Having left mine in the motel, I would be in plain clothes. No one could know who I was anyhow. Thankfully, I had a cap that wouldn’t look too odd in February in Texas. It would hide the tentacle tattoos on my head, part of my calling card.

I asked Poison, “Going to be meeting up with Houston Gods today?”

“Not today. Don’t say anything, but I only offered to do this, so Treasure didn’t have to be in town today.”

Okay? What the hell. “What’s going on today?”

Poison twirled her hair on a finger. “Her ex is riding through on his way to Arizona. He asked for an escort, thinking she’d be part of it.”

“Her ex?” I sounded more surprised than I should have.

“Yeah. Biker from our Arkansas chapter. He’s pissed she’s way out here now.”

Maren had more secrets, more than were even in Merc’s file on her. I pried Poison for intel. “So, your President loved this guy?”

“No clue. She’s tight lipped about everything.”
