“I expect you to talk to me, Grant.”

He shrugged. “I take it, you know Bull’s suspended me. Should you even be talking to me?”

“Yes, I know what Bull did, and he says it’s a club decision and trust me, I had nothing to do with it. It’s why I’m here. I want to see how you’re holding up.”

“Still here.”

“Grant, cut the crap. I get it. You’re an asshole when you feel threatened and all the crap that leads up to it. But this is me we’re talking about.” Maddie moved beside him and took a seat. “And I’m with your niece.”

He looked at his niece and she was wide awake. Love bloomed in his chest.

“She’s gorgeous,” he said. “I’ll sharpen my hunting knives. She is going to have men drooling after her.”

Maddie laughed. “She is, isn’t she?” She stroked her daughter’s head.

“You heard about the missing dogs?”

“Yes. I know the club is out there, searching for them. They’ve already checked the security cameras,” said Maddie.

“Did they?” Grant asked. “Did they see something?”

“No, nothing.”

“Huh.”

He looked at Maddie, and she squinted at him. “You saw something.”

“Just watch,” he said.

He played the video and waited for Maddie to catch on to something. She didn’t see it. He played it again. She didn’t see it.

“Look at the time stamp,” Grant said.

It had taken him a few moments to realize what he was missing.

Maddie frowned and looked closely. “There’s ten minutes. It’s a jump.”

“Yeah, whoever it was had access to this security room. They turned off the main cameras on the path that would lead them out. The two dogs taken were big German shepherds.”

“Wow,” Maddie said.

Grant got to his feet.

“What are you going to do?” Maddie asked.

“Talk to the only person in this building who has the key, and that’s Hellen.”

“She doesn’t know anything.” Maddie reached out to grab his arm.

“She must know something. She was under strict instructions not to give that key to anyone except a club brother.”

“Then according to you, she has already broken the rules.” Maddie immediately winced. “Shit, I’m sorry.”

“No, you’re right, but that is the point, isn’t it? There are two dogs missing.” Grant shook his head.

“Let me call Bull. He can handle this.”

“Fuck that, Maddie. I’m suspended from the club, but that doesn’t mean I can’t do my job. I know what I’m fucking doing.” He stepped out of the room and moved toward Hellen.
