“Don’t ever pull that face again, unless you want to get jumped.”

“No?”

“No.”

He did it again, all wide-eyed and heart-melting.

“I said not to.”

He shot her a megawatt smile that he followed with an eyebrow wiggle. “No, you said only to do it if I wanted to get jumped. I assumed you meant jumped, not sat on and pummelled. Did you mean sat on and pummelled?”

She hadn’t.

“Did no one ever tell you not to make threats you’re not prepared to follow through on?” he prompted.

Jodi whistled through her teeth. What was it about him that made it impossible to be mad at him? “Stop it. No one is jumping anyone, in any sense of the word. We’re in a dinghy. It’ll capsize.”

His tongue ticked against his teeth, while his grin remained enormously wide. “But if we weren’t…”

“If we weren’t, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. And anyway, you’re assuming I’d even want to.”

“The cock and boobs talk kinda implied it.”

“Nope. Doesn’t. And for all I know, you’re a crap lay.”

Paul considered a moment while maintaining his steady oar strokes. “True. It’s possible. Could be that my ego’s so enlarged that I figure my monster dick is an actual magic wand, and all I have to do is wave it a bit and ladies magically come?”

He probably wouldn’t be the first rockstar to imagine so. That said, it seemed unlikely given what she’d learned of him so far. He was too considerate. He was looking after her, when by rights he should be spitting mad at her and ready to have her hauled off to jail.

“For the record,” she muttered. “I don’t actually think you’re a crap lay.”

“But how would you know?”

“It’s a gut feeling.”

“I see, so in the highly esteemed opinion of your gut flora, I’m probably an epic shag, or at least a not totally shit one.”

“Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.”

“Well, thanks for that vote of confidence, Castle flora. Do let me know if you ever want to put the theory to the test.”

“I will,” she said. “On their behalf. As their colony host.”

“Good, good.” He nodded. “You know you’re totally blushing now.” He reached out a hand and made a sizzling noise as he drew his index finger downwards near, but not touching, her cheek. Jodi batted him away and settled into an indignant huff. She was not embarrassed, she was horny, and he was teasing her. She didn’t believe for a second he was actually interested. They were just making conversation, the same as if they’d wound up stuck in a lift together.

“Hey lean over. That way.” He pointed left with his elbow. “Low hanging fruit.”

“What?” She only just ducked in time, narrowly missing colliding with the plastic bag someone had left hanging off an overhanging branch. “Bit more warning.” The scowl she gave him made him chuckle as he dodged out of the way himself.

“I wasn’t envisaging a string of plastic bags to avoid—”

“Wait! Go back.”

“What?”

“Go back,” she insisted. “It’s moving.”

“And that makes you want to go back? It’s probably the wind.”
