Mike nodded. “Everything’s quiet. She’s in the kitchen.”

He found her at the counter reheating some pizza from the other night in the toaster oven. “Hey, beautiful.”

She finally turned to him and seemed to come up short.

He looked down at himself to be sure he didn’t have something on his shirt, then looked at her. “What?”

She eyed him up and down. “Wow. You look really good.”

He loved that she thought so, even if all he’d done was shower and change into black jeans, a hunter-green, long-sleeve Henley, and his boots after he finished work. Nothing special. But, man, the way she looked at him. All he wanted to do was get his hands on her.

He walked right up to her and stared into her pretty hazel eyes. “You keep looking at me like that and the only place I’m going tonight is upstairs to bed with you.” He’d been trying to give her time. It had been really hard not to knock on her door after he babysat Eliza the other night. Last night, the kiss they shared had all the fireworks to spark a long night of making love. He’d reluctantly let her go and abated his raging desire for her with his hand in the shower before going to bed alone.

They hadn’t taken that next step yet. He didn’t want to push or go too fast. They’d both needed time to reconcile the past and appreciate what they had now. A second chance.

But God, he wanted her. Desperately.

She grinned. “I think your brother would miss you being there for his big night.”

“I wish you could meet Cyn and Shelby and be with them tonight for her bachelorette party. They really wanted you to be there.”

Kenna gave him a sad look. “I would have loved tobe included. I can’t wait to meet them, too. But...” She shrugged one shoulder and left it at that.

He closed the distance and put his hands on her hips, knowing, though she tried to hide it, that she was upset about having to stay here under guard and not being able to simply live her life and be with other people. He knew she specifically worried about him and his dad being in the house with her.

But he wondered if there was something more going on. “What I said about us just now... If you want to take things slow, I’m fine with that. Under the circumstances, it’s not like I can date you and take you out, but we can definitely take advantage of being here together by continuing to talk and just being together.”

She placed her hand on his chest. “It’s not that. I want us to be like we used to be. No questions about what the other is thinking or feeling. No hesitation, because we know what we both want.”

“It’s been a while since we were that close and entrenched in each other’s lives. We’re getting there again. I feel it. I hope you do, too.”

“The longer we’re together, the more natural and right it feels. But this thing that’s happening in my life, it complicates things. You’re worried about me. I’m afraid something could happen to you because of me.”

“It won’t be because of you. And it’s a risk I’m willing to take because I’ve lived without you for too long.”

She stepped into him, her legs pressed tight to his.

He pulled her closer, because he needed to touch her and craved the connection.

“I want you desperately.” Her honest words undid him.

Whatever reservations she harbored about him possibly getting hurt, that maybe they’d grown into different people during their separation and should take some time to get to know each other again—all of it—everything vanished from her hazel eyes and turned to need.

“I just want to let everything go.” She kissed him softly. “All I want is to be with you.”

He cupped her face and looked her in the eyes. “It’s been too long and I want you so bad.” He pressed his lips to hers and the same fire that used to burn in both of them exploded like a wildfire and consumed all the words he wanted to say, all the thoughts in his head, until all he knew was her pressed to him and the glorious taste of her.

She clung to him, her nails biting into his back, her mouth as greedy as his, their hearts pressed together and finally beating as one again.

He slipped his hands beneath the soft T-shirt she was wearing and found her warm, smooth skin. She immediately arched and rubbed her belly against his thick erection. Her groan was music to his ears. He wanted to hear a whole damn symphony from her tonight.

And then a thought broke through his lust-hazed mind and he broke the kiss and pushed her away with his hands still gripped on her hips because he really wanted to pull her back. “I nearly forgot.”

“I can’t remember anything right now but that kiss.”

He chuckled. “I’m right there with you, but any secondnow my dad is going to come downstairs, ready to go to Hunt’s bachelor party.”

Her eyes dipped to below his belt, so to speak, then came back up with a question in them. Like,Are you crazy? You want to leave now?
