Chapter Twenty-Two

Kyle regretted that he only had one way out of this mess. He’d sent the invitation to the director and gotten the response he expected. Now he needed to make the call.

“Agent Gunn.”

He wondered if the agent would even bother trying to trace him this time. “The meet is set. Tomorrow night. The director and his man will be there. They think Kenna will be there, too. Just like we planned.” On a previous call they’d had to confirm Kyle had his promise from the government that he got to disappear without handing over the program or creating it again for them.

Not that he trusted the government.

He’d probably end up in some black site.

He hoped to make sure that never happened. All he needed was a moment during the takedown to get free and do what really needed to be done.

Agent Gunn cleared his throat. “We’ll have our teams in place. Kenna and your parents will be protected.Once it’s done, we’ll get you out of there and handle the notification with your family. They’ll be safe. You’ll have a new life.”

It sounded so good.

But it was an illusion, that life Agent Gunn offered. Oh, the agent believed it. He had it all set up.

Kyle just wasn’t that trusting and sure he’d get what was promised, especially after all that had happened and how desperate people were for what he’d created.

“I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

“Kyle, are you all right?”

“Just tying up loose ends before I go.” He hung up, picked up his Sharpie and continued working on his final goodbye.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Max regretted spending another night away from Kenna. He loved that they’d settled into a kind of routine. He kissed her good morning, they had breakfast together, she worked in the barn or did chores in the house, they met for lunch and dinner, then settled on the couch to watch TV, and he kissed her good-night. It all felt good and right and moving forward.

But with each passing day and no news about Kyle, the threat of someone out there who wanted Kenna dead straining all their nerves, he wanted to remain close to her.

But tonight was about being with his brothers and dad and celebrating Hunt’s upcoming wedding to Cyn. He was so happy about them becoming a family.

That thought led to what he wanted for his future. Kenna. For him, it had always been her. And what he wouldn’t give to put his ring on her finger and for them to start a family.

He’d given up on that ever happening. But now it seemed not only possible but inevitable again.

They’d waited so long.

Now each day felt like a day closer to that dream becoming a reality.

He just wished this thing with her brother, the murderer, and the feds was over. More than that, he wished for a positive outcome for Kyle.

It seemed unlikely, given the circumstances and Kyle’s own conclusion on what was going to happen. The weight of which hung heavy on Kenna’s shoulders and darkened her usually bright and cheerful personality. She tried to hide it, but he saw the shadows in her eyes and the quiet way she retreated into herself.

Max walked out of his room, ready to meet his dad downstairs for Hunt’s bachelor party. They were picking up Hunt and Chase and meeting Hunt’s other friends at Cooper’s. They’d reserved the back room for dinner, drinks, poker, and pool.

They’d have fun.

But he’d be thinking about Kenna, worried that something might happen to her while he was gone.

She wasn’t in her room, so he headed downstairs.

Mike was on his phone in the dining room by the front windows.

“Everything okay?”
