He brushed his fingers along the side of her face. “Luckiest man alive.”

Her eyes teared up. “Max. I don’t know what to say, except that’s really sweet and I love you.”

He took her back upstairs and immediately saw how she’d framed the note and put it by their bed. “You did like it.” He thought she’d just been humoring him.

“I wouldn’t lie to you.”

He kissed her softly. “I never thought you did. I just didn’t expect you to keep it.”

“Sometimes it’s the little things that make the best memories and mean the most.” She glanced at the note, then touched her fingers to the diamond heart on her chest. “You love me the way I want to be loved.”

He slipped his hand under her hair at the back of her neck and pulled her in for a kiss. “Love me, the way I want to be loved right now.”

She grinned. “You have the best ideas.”

He didn’t know any better way to spend a snowy Christmas morning than making love to Kenna, taking it slow and easy and lavishing her with all his love as she poured all of hers into him. They took their time, then spent a half hour just lying in bed talking about this and that and nothing in each other’s arms.

They showered, changed, and made it downstairs in time to welcome their family into the house.

The laughter and love were so abundant they filled the house with raucous joy.

They ate, drank, sang along to the Christmas carols playing, and he, Chase, and Hunt put together several toys for the little ones.

And before Kenna’s parents left that evening, he pulled them aside, while Cyn and Shelby kept Kenna distracted, and told Kenna’s parents about his plan to ask Kenna to marry him and asked for their blessing.

It wasn’t the first Christmas they’d spent together. It wouldn’t be their last. But it was the last one they’d spend as boyfriend and girlfriend and not husband and wife.

He fell asleep that night with Kenna in his arms and his heart overflowing with love and excitement, knowing it was only a matter of days before he secured the yes he wanted from the only woman he’d ever loved.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Max couldn’t believe this day had finally come. It required quite a bit of planning, but he was confident he had everything set up and in place.

Kenna walked into the kitchen wearing the dress he’d subtly suggested she put on this morning because he liked staring at her legs and would like to take it off her with his teeth that night.

Maybe not so subtle after all.

Plus she’d look great in the proposal video and pictures their family would take later.

After his comment to her about how he’d undress her later, she’d teased him by dropping her towel and taking an achingly long time to slide her panties on, then a sexy black bra, and finally the cranberry wrap dress, all while he salivated and restrained himself from stripping her bare again and taking her back to bed.

“You look lovely,” his dad said, toasting her with his coffee mug.

“Thank you, Wayne.” She’d added a simple white cardigan to keep her warm.

It was early January and freezing outside, the ground dusted with fresh snow from last night.

She pulled her new favorite mug from the strainer and filled it with coffee. The mug belonged to her brother. She’d kept a few things after she and her parents cleaned out his place. A picture of her and Kyle as kids sitting on the hearth at their childhood home now sat on the mantel in their living room. The other photos and mementoes she’d kept were up in their room, waiting to be put out after the renovation they had scheduled to start next month.

“Max? You okay?”

He glanced up at her from his seat at the table, where one of her plants sat center stage. “I’m great, sweetheart. Just thinking about all the packing we need to do in here so the contractor can redo the kitchen in a few weeks.”

“It won’t take that long, though it will be hard to be without the kitchen for a while. We can set up the necessities in the dining room until it’s done and make do the best we can.”

He smiled, loving that nothing ever seemed insurmountable to her. It was just a problem to be solved.

“Are you excited to be back in the classroom today?” his dad asked.
