She subtracted out thexvariable...

-7i> -21u

Then she divided by -7 and flipped the > to < and got...

i< 3u

I love you.

She pressed the paper to her heart and let the silent tears fall, thinking about how lucky she was to be loved by Max, hopeful and excited that she got to spend the rest of her life with him.

She remembered the spare frame she’d unpacked and put in the nightstand, thinking she’d use it for a picture of her and Max sometime in the future. Instead, she pulled it out, folded and tore the paper down to size, and framed the note. She positioned it on the nightstand right behind Max’s watch so every night she went to sleep, every morning she woke up, she’d see it right there.

Filled with a need to see her Wilde man, like Cyn liked to call Hunt and Shelby called Chase, she threw the covers aside, pulled on the red flannel pajamas she’d picked out just for today, and ran down the stairs to kiss Max.

Max was sitting on the couch, drinking a cup of coffee, enjoying the Christmas tree lights, the blazing fire he’d set, and the Christmas music he had on low, thinking about Kenna asleep in their bed upstairs.

They’d been through so much to get to today.

He heard her rushing down the stairs before he saw her, but he was already smiling and setting aside hiscoffee when she came around the couch, straddled his lap, cupped his face, and kissed him soundly.

“I love you, too.”

He chuckled. “You liked the note.”

“I loved it.”

He knew she would. He also knew it would remind her of Kyle. “I have to confess, I’m not as good as your brother at the whole code thing. I found that love equation on the internet.”

“I don’t care. It’s the thought and love behind it that matters to me. Thank you.” She kissed him again.

He pulled the present out from under the pillow beside him and held it up to her.

She stared at the green wrapped package with the bright red bow like she didn’t know what to do with it.

“Last night you asked if you could open a present early. Well, it’s Christmas Day and I’d like you to have this and wear it today.”

She took the little gift and unwrapped it, revealing the velvet jewelry box. She grinned at him, then flipped the box open. Nothing but pure joy filled her eyes, along with some tears. “Max, it’s gorgeous. I love it.”

He took the box, pulled out the necklace, undid the clasp, then wrapped the gold chain around her neck, and clasped it again.

Kenna picked up the diamond heart-shaped necklace and stared at it again, the stones sparkling in the light. “It’s beautiful.”

He raised a brow. “You weren’t expecting something else?”

She grinned. “Maybe for a second.”

He put her mind at ease that he wasn’t taunting her or holding back. “There’s nothing I want more than for you to be my wife. I just want the proposal to be special. Ours. A day we’ll remember simply as the day I asked you and you said yes.”

She leaned in and kissed him softly. “I completely understand and agree. I know you love me. I know what you want is the same as what I want. So today we’ll celebrate the holiday as a family. Yours. Mine. Ours together. And someday soon, we’ll have something else to celebrate with them, too.”

“And today, you’ll wear that and know I love you and that will never change.”

“That’s all I need.” She kissed him again. “Best boyfriend ever.”
