She put her hand on his forearm. “But I want us settled first.”

He slipped his hand up her neck to the back of her head underneath her hair. “Absolutely. We’ll get us and the house in order.” He kissed her again, making her think of the bed just steps away, even if the mattress was off-kilter on the frame, the sheets and blankets a tangled and torn mess.

When Max leaned back, ready to get to work, shedistracted him with another long, deep kiss. They lost themselves in each other’s arms for a moment that seemed to stretch with every kiss and caress. She leaned into Max, rocking her hips against the thick erection pressed to her belly.

But it was Max who pulled back and took a steadying breath. “We need to get this work done so we can go home.”

“Are you sure?” She rubbed her front against his, tempting him.

His eyes heated with desire. He kissed his way down her neck. “Bed’s a wreck.” He kissed the swell of her breast in the V of her shirt. “There’s glass everywhere.”

“You’ll have to pick another spot.”

He nipped at her hard nipple over her shirt and bra. “I like this spot.” He slipped his hand down her belly and over her mound, rubbing the heel of his hand against her clit over her leggings and damp panties. “But this spot is my favorite.”

“All of you is my favorite,” she said on a breathless whisper.

He stilled and looked into her eyes, then he kissed her like he hadn’t done so just a second ago, like it had been forever since he touched her.

And right there in the little hallway between the living area and her bedroom, right next to the linen closet, he stripped her clothes away, tore off his, sank to his knees in front of her and nuzzled his nose against her belly. His hands slid up her thighs, over her hips, around to her ass and squeezed as he buried his face in the V ofher thighs and loved her with his mouth and that wicked tongue, until her knees buckled and she was lying on the floor, her butt stuck to a magazine, a random spoon poking at her side, and Max’s warm body covering hers. His chest pressed to her breasts and he kissed her again and thrust into her. He stopped for a moment to savor the feel of their two bodies joined, then he moved, pulling out, then diving in deep again. She spread her thighs wider, planted her hands on his very fine ass, and pulled him to her again and again.

Max groaned. Their lovemaking became a steady push and pull, until Max broke the kiss, hooked his arm beneath her knee, pulled her leg up and to the side so he had a better angle to rock his hips into hers, creating that sweet friction she needed on her swollen clit. The pleasure coursing through her amplified and exploded, her inner muscles locking onto his long, thick cock, taking him over the edge with her.

He nearly collapsed on top of her, but caught himself on his forearms, keeping his weight off her, so he didn’t hurt her ribs, his face in her neck as her legs slid out, pushing several towels that had been tossed out of the linen closet beside them further into the living room. Spent, she held Max in a soft embrace and caressed his back with soft sweeps of her fingers over his smooth skin.

“What were we supposed to be doing?” Max asked, kissing her shoulder.

She responded with the only thing that mattered in life. “Loving each other.”

Max rose so he could look down at her, brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, then leaned down and pressed his lips to hers in a kiss so soft and sweet it brought tears to her eyes because of all the love he packed into it. “You are the one who matters most to me.”

“I love you so much, Max.” It felt right to make one last good memory in the apartment they’d spent so much time in together before their breakup, and for this to be the way they put the past behind them and moved to the ranch that would be their forever home together.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Kenna sat on the front porch in a rocking chair, resting her sore abdomen and ribs. Max had moved a new dresser into their room yesterday for her. She’d spent the last hour putting away the last of her clothes. To make the room feel more like theirs, she put a few of her favorite things out, like the photos of her and Max and a couple of her family, including one of her and Kyle. She was officially moved in, though most of the boxes from her apartment were still packed and in a spare room. She’d figure out where she wanted to put her other things later, or if she needed them at all.

Right now, she waited for Max to finish work and head up to the house for dinner, excited to spend some alone time with him again later tonight.

Shelby pulled into the drive, just as Chase and Max walked out of the barn. Shelby climbed out, waved to her, then helped Eliza out of the back seat. The little one spotted her daddy and made a run for him. “She wants to see Cupcake. I’m going up to talk to Kenna,” Shelby shouted.

Chase scooped up his little one, hugged her, then handed her off to Max, who immediately kissed her on the forehead, settled her on his hip, and took her into the barn to see her favorite pony.

Shelby joined her on the porch and took the rocking chair next to her and sighed with contentment. “It’s so good to see you smiling.”

Kenna couldn’t help herself. “I love that man so much. And I love seeing him with Chase, and his niece. Sitting here, watching them together, seeing you pull up to bring Eliza to see her daddy at work and the horses, it just feels so like family. I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be.”

“And soon, I hope, we’ll be more than friends. You’ll be my sister-in-law. Cyn, of course, is already. She married her Wilde man. I got mine. You’ll get yours locked up soon. I’ve never seen Max so happy. When I first met him, he was always a little hungover and kind of sad. He never looked really happy. Or even content. I didn’t know him when you were together back in the day. But now I see that without you in his life, he was missing something. You.”

Kenna understood that all too well.

Max had expressed how he’d gotten through each day, but he hadn’t really been happy. Shelby and his family all saw it.

Kyle had seen the same in her. “I felt the same way. I tried to focus on work and helping my kids. But it wasn’t enough to ease the loneliness. I thought about him all the time. I blamed myself for losing him. I thought upridiculous ways I’d try to bump into him, so that maybe he’d talk to me, but I never followed through.”

Shelby grinned. “But now you’re together. You’re all moved in. You’re both looking toward the future. You two should celebrate that all you can. After what Chase and I went through, we don’t take a second for granted.”

Never again, she silently vowed. “Max and me, we’ve always been our best when we’re with each other.”
