“What is that supposed to mean?” Anger immediately curled at her edges, sharp and painful.

“It means getting drunk on a first date with a guy you barely know was dumb.” Hal dropped Izzie’s leash, and she wandered away to sniff at the grass again. “I know you’re not stupid, Savina, so what the hell were you thinking, getting drunk?”

Disbelief mixed with her anger. “Since when did you get so judgmental, Hal?”

“I’m not being judgmental. I’m looking out for a friend,” he snapped.

“Friend? Oh, now, we’re friends? You’ve been avoiding me for nearly a year, or have you forgotten that?” she said. “That isn’t something a friend does.”

“It doesn’t change the fact that you put yourself in real danger that night,” he said. “If I hadn’t been there -”

“If you hadn’t been there, I would have taken care of the problem myself. I’m not some helpless little girl.”

“Drinking too much made you vulnerable.” Hal’s face was red, and his usual calm and easygoing nature had vanished. “Why would you be so reckless?”

“It’s none of your business,” she said. “Izzie, come.”

“I deserve an explanation,” Hal said.

“Like hell you do,” she said.

His eyebrows drew down in a fierce scowl. “Drinking that much was stupid and -”

Her temper, which she’d been clinging to by the thinnest of rope, snapped like a dead branch. “I needed to be drunk to fuck him, okay?”

Hal stared at her like she’d grown a second head. “You were going to have sex with that guy?”

“Yes, I was.” She stared defiantly at him. “Do you have a problem with that?”

“I have a problem with you needing to be drunk to sleep with some guy,” Hal snarled.

“Well, excuse me for needing a little liquid courage to have sex for the first time in over three years,” she said.

“If you need to be drunk, then you’re not ready,” he said.

“Don’t,” she said. “You don’t get to tell me what I am or am not ready for. Fuck right off with that bullshit, Hal.”

“I’m trying to keep you safe,” he said.

“No, you’re just pissed that your best friend’s wife is moving on with her life. Alan’s gone, Hal, and it isn’t fair of you to think I should stay celibate for the rest of my life.”

It was the wrong thing to say. Her eyes widened when Hal stalked toward her. She backed up until her back hit the clinic wall, the coldness from the brick seeping through her clothing as Hal braced his hands on the wall and penned her in.

“That is not what this is about,” he said in a dangerously quiet voice. “This is about me keeping you safe.”

“That isn’t your job,” she said. “You thinking you have the right to tell me what to do is rich, considering that you barely speak to me anymore. In fact, I… Hal? Are you even listening to me?”

Hal was staring at her mouth, and her breath released in a squeaky sigh when his gaze dipped to her breasts. “Hal?”

He slowly lifted his gaze to her, and every muscle in her lower stomach clenched tight at the look on his face. He wanted her. It had been a long time since a man had looked at her like Hal was, but she recognized desire when she saw it. Her nipples pebbled tight, and her pussy throbbed with a need to be filled.

Images flooded her head. Images of Hal pulling down her jeans and panties. Hal freeing his cock, pushing her thighs apart, and fucking her right there against the clinic wall. Fucking her until that empty ache was gone, until nothing mattered but the feel of his cock, the sound of his voice, the glorious chase for her orgasm.

“Savina,” Hal’s voice was low and tortured. “Christ, whatever you’re thinking… stop.”

“Hal,” she whispered before raising one shaky hand and pressing it against his chest. “Hal, I need… please.”

He groaned and stepped forward, bridging the tiny gap between them, and pressed his mouth against hers. Savina fisted his shirt, pulling him even closer as she returned his kiss. His lips were warm and firm, and she shuddered with pleasure when he flicked his tongue against the seam of her lips. She opened for him, welcoming his tongue with soft moans and gentle licks.
