He explored her mouth with a slow, almost lazy style that made desire drip through her like sweet honey. This was what she craved, what she needed. She didn’t care that her toes were going numb from the cold or that Hal was supposed to be working. She could kiss Hal forever and never get tired of it.

Hal’s knee nudged at hers, and she spread her legs, moaning into his mouth when his thick thigh pressed up against her pussy. She ground herself shamelessly against his leg, needing friction and relief for that endless ache.

She reached for his belt buckle, whining in frustration when Hal grabbed her hands and lifted them over her head. He pinned her arms to the wall with one hand around her wrists, and she arched against him when he nipped at her throat.

“I want to touch you,” she said.

He shook his head, his hands tightening around her wrists. “No.”

“Why not?” She really should have been more embarrassed than she was by how needy she sounded.

He kissed his way to her ear, sucking lightly on her earlobe as his other hand rested on her ribcage just below her breasts. “Because I’ll fuck you right here if you put your hands anywhere near my dick, sweet Savina.”

She moaned, grinding her pussy against his thigh again. “I’m good with that.”

He grunted in surprise before staring at her. His nostrils flared as he sucked in a harsh breath. “Fuck, you’re being serious.”

She rubbed against his thigh again, biting at her bottom lip when his thumb rubbed along the underside of one breast. “Hal, I -”

“Hey, Hal? Do you have time to -”

Nathan’s voice dropped off in a surprised grunt. Hal stared at the young veterinarian who’d stepped out from the side door, his hands tightening almost painfully around Savina’s wrists before he let her go and stepped back.

Embarrassment flooding through her, Savina hurried toward the door. “Izzie, come.”

Her voice was high-pitched and weird sounding, and she could have hugged the lab mix with gratitude when the dog immediately followed her into the clinic.

She grabbed Izzie’s leash and, keeping her head down and praying she didn’t run into Warren, walked past the swinging door and into the clinic foyer. Thankfully, Fatima was on the phone, and Savina waved briefly at her before escaping.

She lifted Izzie into the truck, climbed in behind her, and slammed the door shut. She stared at herself in the rearview mirror. Her lip gloss was smeared, her cheeks were bright pink, and her eyes were wild.

“Oh God,” she groaned before staring at Izzie. “What did I just do?”

Izzie chuffed, and Savina buried her face in her hands for a few seconds before starting the truck. “This is bad, Izzie. This is ‘I have to move to a new town’ bad.”

Izzie laid down on the seat, unconcerned with Savina’s plight. Her heart still a frantic beat against her ribcage, Savina drove toward home.

CHAPTER5

“You ready to tell me what’s wrong yet?”

Hal ran the brush down Molly’s side again. Molly turned her big head to investigate Hal’s shirt pocket for a piece of carrot, and Hal rubbed the horse’s forehead. “Why do you think something’s wrong?”

“Whenever you’re upset, I find you in my stables brushing the horses.” Solomon leaned against the wall. “Not that I mind the free labour, but you’ll feel better if you tell me what’s wrong instead of bottling it up.”

Hal studied the big man. Solomon Whitaker owned Whitaker Ranch, one of the largest and most prosperous ranches in Harmony Falls. As teenagers, Hal, Solomon, and Alan had been inseparable. And while they’d taken very different career paths, they’d remained best friends, supporting each other through the best and worst parts of their lives for the last forty years.

Hal ran the brush across Molly’s back. “I kissed Savina last weekend.”

There was no judgment on Solomon’s face which Hal appreciated, but he still felt defensive. “I know, I’m an asshole.”

“Oh, yeah, you’re an asshole, but not for kissing Savina,” Solomon said with a slight grin. “Come on, let’s go to the house and get a drink before you brush Molly raw.”

A few minutes later, they were sitting in the comfortable leather chairs in Solomon’s study. Solomon poured them each a glass of whiskey, and Hal sipped at the amber liquid, relishing the burn in his belly. The study door opened, and Solomon’s wife, Heather, stuck her head into the room. “Hey, Hal.”

“Hi Heather, how are you?”

“Good, thanks.” She smiled at him before turning to Solomon. “I’m leaving for town. Do you need anything?”
