“Yikes,” Harper said. “No wonder he’s been avoiding you all day.”

“He’s pissed at me,” Savina said with a sigh. Her stomach churned. Upsetting Hal made her feel like a real asshole. Hell, shewasan asshole. A confused, well-meaning asshole, but still an asshole.

“No, he isn’t,” Harper said. “I’ve known Hal since I was a little kid, and he doesn’t have his pissed-off look. It’s more of a ‘kicked puppy’ look.”

“That makes me feel worse,” Savina said.

“Sorry, honey.” Now it was Harper’s turn to put her arm around Savina. “Why did you leave?”

“It’s complicated,” Savina glanced at the open doorway, “and this probably isn’t the best time to try to explain.”

“Fair enough,” Harper said. “But I’ll tell Dad that I’ll drive you home, and we can -”

“Harper?” Addie walked into the living room. She wore sweatpants and a t-shirt, and her auburn hair was pulled into a neat bun on top of her head. She wore no makeup, but her skin was flawless, and she looked like she was breezing in from a day spent at the spa rather than lifting and moving heavy boxes all day.

“Oh my God,” Harper said with a good-natured scowl. “Can you please explain to me why we did an equal amount of carrying boxes today, and yet, you look like a freaking sun goddess, and I look like a lumpy, sweaty cobweb monster?”

Addie laughed. “Don’t be ridiculous. You look gorgeous.”

“I don’t smell gorgeous,” Harper said.

“That’s for sure,” Savina said.

“Hey!” Harper said as Addie laughed again.

“Your dad sent me in here to find you. Connor and Preacher have loaded the last of the boxes into the U-Haul. Can you come outside?”

“Help me up,” Harper said, holding her hands out. Addie grabbed her hands and hauled her to her feet.

Harper took Savina’s hand and helped her up. “C’mon, gorgeous.”

The three of them joined the others in the front yard. Warren stood next to the U-Haul, the setting sun sending beams of cold light across the yard.

Hal leaned against the U-Haul beside Warren with his arms folded across his chest. He’d stripped off his hoodie, and Savina studied how his t-shirt pulled across his chest. A memory of that hard chest, of the salt and pepper hair that covered it, wormed its way into her head. She looked away, her cheeks turning hot as her lady bits sat up and demanded another go at Hal’s thick cock.

“I can’t say thank you enough for all your help today,” Warren said. “It’s much appreciated, and I’d like to take you to The Pizza Stone for pizza and cold beer.”

“Can I sneak in on that?” Nathan had joined them, jogging across the small footbridge that crossed the small creek between the vet clinic and Warren’s house. He went to put his arms around Harper, and she pressed a hand against his chest.

“You might not want to get too close until after I shower,” she said.

He grinned at her and pulled her into his embrace. “You smell great to me.”

“Lies, all lies,” she said with a cute grin before patting his butt.

“Yes, you can join us,” Warren said. “There will be plenty of food.”

“But only because you’re helping unload the U-Haul tomorrow. Otherwise, you’d have to just sit there and watch me eat pizza and drink beer,” Harper said with a teasing grin.

Warren rolled his eyes before rummaging in his pocket for keys. “Let’s head out.”

“I need to pass on the invite,” Savina said. “I’m pretty tired, and I should get home and check on Izzie and the puppies.”

“You sure?” Warren asked.

She nodded. “Yes. I’ll see you tomorrow at the condo around nine?”

Warren smiled gratefully at her. “Sounds good. Thank you.”
