"Hmmm. I can show you more...your parent's death, for example."

Apollyn's words felt like a dagger in my heart. I wanted to hear what she had to say about my parents' death, to finally gain closure, but I was also scared that the truth might be too much for me to handle. I always knew there was more to my parent's death than just a random act of terrorism. I had spent years trying to ignore the pain, but now that there was a chance of finding out the truth, I couldn't bring myself to turn away.

"What do you know about my parents?" I asked, my voice trembling.

Apollyn's eyes gleamed. "Something you don't," he said. "I can show you what happened to them, if you're willing to come with me."

I stayed where I was, my mind grappling with conflicting emotions. Despite my lack of faith in Apollyn, the possibility of discovering the truth about my parents was too hard to give up.

I needed to know.

If Apollyn was lying to me, I was going to kill me. I wouldn't wait for his sons to do it themselves. I would do it myself.

"Okay," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Loki jumped in my arms. "I'll go with you but I’m taking my cat.”

“Very well.” Apollyn's smile grew wider as he opened up a rift of his own, a bright light beckoning me forward. I took a step forward, and then another, until I was standing in the light.

It was like stepping into another world. The air was thick with magic, and I could feel power surging through me like a tidal wave as we teleporting as quickly as the speed of light.

Without an ounce of regret, I was already in a very precarious situation. By the time it was all over, I realized I would need some serious firepower to take down all the resulting mayhem.

Sadie

Ifinally understood what one of Apollyn's superior abilities was: Mind control.

He had not controlled my mind, but he certainly did plant those distressing images of his sons which I had yet to determine if they were truth or made up.

But Apollyn had evidently used some form of mind control or magic compulsion on the two guards standing watch near the doorway. They said nothing to us, and as if spellbound, they let us through without a badge or the requisite security clearance. I could hardly believe what had just happened.

We entered the main lobby. I stood there in the moment and couldn't help but feel a sense of eerie familiarity. This was where I worked. Memories began flooding back to me. I realized I didn't miss the job at all. The only reason I took it was to learn more about the terrorist attack that took the lives of my parents. I was desperate for answers, for closure. Even now.

Everyone rushed around from point A to point B until...well, until Apollyn happened.

"Acasus," he uttered.

A blanket of eerie silence descended upon the police precinct as every individual simultaneously paused in their steps. The airaround them felt thick and heavy, as if it had been frozen in time. Apollyn stood in the center of it all, with a confidently poised posture and the shadows of his power radiating from his eyes. I watched in amazement, wondering how he could possess such control. I believed only the gods could hold such dominion over their surroundings. I was wrong.

"Did you—?"

Before I could finish, he held up his hands and security doors ripped off the frames and he gestured for me to go inside.

"Top security clearance granted," Apollyn said.

My heart raced as the first thing that came to mind was taking advantage by searching for information on my parents' death.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" he urged.

I walked across the threshold and led myself carefully through the desk of some of the detectives careful not to touch anything. Loki on the other hand seemed intent on making a mess, swatting papers onto the floor an knocking over coffee cups.

"Stop that, Loki," I hissed, picking up a stack of newspapers and carefully scanning the headlines.

My eyes were immediately drawn to the words when I recognized who was on the front page. A very popular senator had made the headlines and in the picture with him was Magda, her arm linked through his. I could scarcely believe it when I saw it.

I shivered as a chill breeze blew across my skin. I slowly turned around, and there stood Apollyn, his icy eyes boring into mine.

He stared down at the news article with a smirk, "Ah, I see what your archenemy is up to."
