"What in the world?!"

Chapter 18

Sadie

"You can't get rid of me that easily," Apollyn said, a smirk on his face.

I knew he was part of a problem that would likely never go away anytime soon, but I wanted to get rid of him, like now.

I glared at him, fear and anger warring inside me. He seemed to be immune to my magic now, or had just gotten really smart about not underestimating me.

"You're not getting what you want," I said firmly. "I won't help you, no matter what kind of magic you offer me."

He laughed, a cold and cruel sound. "We'll see about that," he said. "I have ways of making you see things my way."

I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead. I had no idea how I was going to get out of this. But I knew one thing for sure: I couldn't let Apollyn have his way. I had to find a way to defeat him now, no matter what it took.

Soon, I realized that the sweat breaking out on my forehead wasn't because of Apollyn's irritation. He was in my head, trying to read my thoughts.

I took a step back, shaking my head in disbelief. "Get out of my head," I said, my voice shaking.

"But I have something I want you to see. Just look, and see for yourself."

I felt a surge of strange thoughts and visions in my mind, images of my Altair, Morpheus, and Dominik on murderous and bloody rampages in both Earth and Shadow World. I saw them causing destruction and terror, their eyes wild and crazed. Their mouths filled with blood—human blood.

"My sons. They used to be the only killing horde I could rely upon to get the dirty work done..."

"No..." I whispered, willing the visions away.

"This can't be real." I shut my eyes tight, desperately trying to block out the images that kept creeping in. I wanted to believe it was some kind of trick, but I knew it wasn't that simple. He had already planted the seed of doubt in my mind.

"I'm not planting anything; the tree is already full grown." he said. "This is the truth, whether you like it or not."

I felt a wave of anger rise up inside me. "I won't let you manipulate me," I said. "They would never do something like this."

"You haven't known them that long. Not for the centuries I have known them," Apollyn said, a smirk on his face.

"It doesn't matter what they did in the past. Your sons have changed."

"Really? Are you so sure about that? I have proof, evidence of actions for which there is no redemption. I can show you, if you just give me the chance."

I felt a chill run down my spine. What if he was telling the truth? What if they weren't as innocent as I thought? I recalled what Morpheus told me the last time I was jerked away from them.

Don't trust a thing he says.

He fed me more visions of my men taking out hordes of demon human hybrids on a dusty realm my men had never taken me.

"Dust devils. We defeated them just a century ago," Apollyn explained.

"So what if they killed your enemies for you? You said it yourself. They were your army. You sent them on these missions."

"But that's not all."

"I don't want to see any more," I said, my voice shaking. "Get out of my head and get out of my apartment."

"You can try to deny it all you want, but you know I'm telling the truth about my sons. You'll come around eventually."

"I don't care what they've done. You should know that by now," I shouted.
