“I see. A grown-up name for a grown man who makes juvenile decisions.”

I stood up. “Objection, your honor.”

Stevie looked over at me and raised her eyebrow. “It’s for clarification, Mr. Buchanan.”

“I understand, but bullying Mr. Ferguson isn’t required for clarification.”

“Oh, I’m not bullying anyone. Just stating the facts.”

I looked over at Judge Smith. I expected him to call Stevie out, but he didn’t. He didn’t say anything. I shrugged my shoulders at him and he shrugged back, then returned his attention to Stevie. Right then, I realized he was going to let her run with the ball this morning: she was the newest addition to the district attorney’s office and he wanted to see what she was made of. I also realized my hands were now tied. It didn’t matter how hard I fought this case.

“Moving on, Mr. Ferguson,” Stevie said, dead-eyeing him again. “Last year, you had your son taken away from you by the state of Texas due to your and your wife’s negligence of him caused by your illegal drug use. You got help for it, had Jacob returned to your home, started using drugs again, and then began physically abusing Jacob. Correct?”

“Yes but I…”

Stevie held up her hand. “It’s a yes or no question.”

Mr. Ferguson cocked his jaw to the side. “Yes.”

“And here you are again in a court of law not only having to answer for your actions but also wanting another shot at being a responsible and loving father to your son. Correct?”

“Yes.”

“Is it also correct that you’ve gone through a second round of treatment for your drug use and also went through parental counseling again?”

“Yes.”

“How many months ago was that?”

“Three.”

“And you’ve been clean of drugs ever since?

“Yes.”

Stevie walked back over to the prosecutor’s table, picked up her cellphone, and pulled up something on the screen. “Mr. Ferguson, do you have any social media accounts?” she asked, approaching him again.

“Why?”

“Yes or no.”

“Yes.”

“On which platforms?”

“Facebook and Instagram.”

“Do you have your accounts set to private or public?”

“Private.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.”

“Okay,” she said, half-laughing. “When was the last time you posted something on either account?”

“I don’t know. A couple of weeks ago maybe.”
