“Hey, Bash. Buchanan,” she said as all three of us met and came to a standstill on the steps.

“How are you, doll?” Bash asked, stepping closer to Stevie to give her a hug.

I was going to have to refrain from doing that, though, as tempting as it was. I’d just caught the scent of Stevie’s body lotion in the air—the lotion she’d rubbed all over her neck, chest, arms, and legs this morning after she and I took that hot shower together. I really liked the way that it smelled and when I commented about it to Stevie, she held up her bottle of “Warm Vanilla Sugar” from Bath and Body Works for me to see.

I told her that she smelled like a delicious sugar cookie and I wanted to take a big bite of her. I’d wanted to early this morning and I wanted to at this very second. It wasn’t just the scent of the lotion, though, that had reignited my senses. It was how it mixed with Stevie’s body chemistry and right now, the combined scent of the two was making my mouth water and was also causing my cock to get hard. Thankfully, my suit jacket was long enough to shield what was happening. I just needed it to stop.

“I’m doing well. How are you?” Stevie asked Bash.

“Fantastic!”

I hadn’t taken my eyes off my lover and noticed how she was trying tonotlook at me for very long. Only a few quick glances. I wanted more of her attention though, so I reached out my hand to shake hers.

“Sinclair,” I said, calling her by her last name as she had done with me. She’d chosen to take the “friendly-professional” route, so I followed her lead but I couldn’t help but wonder how long this reserved approach between us was going to last.

“And how are you this morning?” She gripped my hand firmly and stared straight into my eyes this time.

“Better than Bash.”

I saw her façade slip a little, evidenced by the grin that was now playing along her sparkly lips.

“Is it really possible to be better than fantastic, Buchanan?”

“It most certainly is.”

“Then you’re gonna have to tell me what your secret is for feeling that way.”

“I will…some other time.”

Just like what happened on the evening when Stevie and I officially met at Mystic Bar and shook hands, and also when we saw each other in the Whole Foods parking lot and shook hands—we kept holding on to each other after our greeting. Once again, I found myself caught up in searching her eyes like she was doing to mine right now, and in hers, I saw the fire that she was trying to contain. The fire that I’d put there.

We realized at the same time that we’d been staring at each other for far too long and had also been holding each other’s hands in Bash’s presence. We instantly pulled our eyes away and unclasped our hands, dropping them to our sides. I cleared my throat and so did Stevie. Then we both looked over at Bash, who was side-eyeing us.

“Did I just see something here between the two of you? Something that I wasn’t supposed to see?” he asked, pointing back and forth at us.

Stevie and I jerked our heads back at the same time. “What?” we said, also at the same damn time.

“You heard me.”

“No, you didn’t see anything other than my respect and admiration for this lady,” I said, half-laughing. I was doing my best to try to make Bash doubt what he’d clearly witnessed.

“And you saw mine for Zac,” Stevie added, switching from calling me by my last name. I didn’t know if that was intentional or another slip.

Grinning from ear to ear now, Bash began patting me on one cheek while looking straight at Stevie. “Okay. Keep telling yourselves that, but I know what I saw—and I get it,” he said, dropping his hand away from my face. “Just be careful, myfriends. Really careful. I’d hate for this to blow up in both of your pretty faces.”

He turned to me while saying that last sentence, then I looked over at Stevie. Her eyes were drowning in concern.

“It’s okay,” I said, touching her shoulder.

I was trying to put her at ease—there was no need for her to worry about a thing. Bash would never tell a soul about the affair that he’d just figured out I was having with Stevie.

“I-I should probably go now,” she stammered.

“I’ll call you later.”

She nodded at me, looked over at Bash, smiled nervously, and then said, “Bye, guys.”

We told her goodbye and watched her as she was walking up the steps toward the courthouse, and as soon as she was out of hearing range, Bash turned to me.
