“I hope you do too, Buchanan.”

He dropped his arm down from the control panel and the two of us continued staring at each other until the elevator doors closed. I glanced around and was relieved to see that no one was anywhere near me. In fact, the hallway was still empty. It was strange—just like it was when Zac and I had arrived at this floor and also when we stood by the elevators on the first floor, waiting for one to arrive. We were alone with each other in both instances.

Still standing here in this quiet hallway on the fourth floor of the Dallas courthouse, I had to shake my head at not only the way that things timed out with Zac this morning but also atthe last part of what he said to me before those elevator doors closed. He saw right through the neutral, friendly front that I’d been trying to uphold while in his presence. My eyes told him the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I did want Zac and I did want to have an affair with him. I had no doubt of how passionate it’d be—but I couldn’t agree to go through with it. I was still concerned about Zac and Malcolm somehow getting hurt, and that was the last thing that I wanted to happen. They had so much more to lose than I did and now, I just had to figure out when I was going to tell Zac again that I couldn’t be his lover.

LIFE WOULD’VE BEENso much easier if it was black and white. Despite black-and-white rules, laws, and moral codes, certain situations fell within the varying shades of gray, and it was the gray that made making certain decisions in life so difficult.

“Today feels like it should be Friday but it’s only Monday,” Brooke said, peeking her head around my open office door. Then she leaned against the door frame.

“Yeah, it really does. It’s been a long day.”

“I don’t know if it’s the moon cycle or what, but everyone up here is frazzled. Normally, their cases don’t get to them this much.”

“It could very well be the moon. It’s gonna be a full one tonight.”

“Shit, that’s gotta be the culprit then. There’s no other reason for the crazy vibe in this office today,” Brooke chuckled.

“Sounds like all of you are moon sensitive.”

“I guess we are, but you don’t seem to be.”

“Oh, I definitely sense it, but it doesn’t bother me.”

“Are you part witch or something?”

I chuckled then. “I just enjoy the full moon is all. It’s so pretty to look at and that’s what I’ll be doing tonight after it comes up.”

“Well, that’s much later. How about joining me at Mystic Bar after work? I need to unwind for a little while.”

“Sure. I’ll meet you there.”

“Great! I’m gonna go ask the others about joining us.”

“Okay. And even if they don’t want to, I’ll still go.”

“Sounds good. By the way—I’ve been meaning to ask you all day how your visit went with your dad, over the weekend.”

“It was wonderful, and so good to see his face. Our time together went by too fast is all. He spent only Friday night with me and left to go back to Austin after lunch on Saturday.”

“That was a really quick trip for him.”

“I know. I’ll be going to see him next and will get more time with him because I’ll be there Friday through Sunday. I may even go see the old man preach at his church.”

“He’d probably love that.”

“I would too.”

“So did you do anything fun with the rest of your weekend?”

Brooke’s question caught me off guard. “Um, I went to the zoo on Saturday afternoon.”
