“All I know to tell you is to pray for God’s direction in your life, cling to your faith with both hands and then hang on. It may get bumpy for a while but keep believing, keep going and keep looking up at the stars.”

“NO, I HAVEN’Thad any contact with Zac since the day he showed up at my house in Dallas to tell me goodbye before I moved here. Why do you ask?” I said to Melissa. We were eating lunch together at Cypress Grill in Austin.

“Because you and Zac have been on my mind for the past few days for some reason. Plus, haven’t we all heard of old lovers reaching out to each other just to see how they’re doing?”

“Sure, I’ve heard of that happening, but it hasn’t happened between Zac and me. It doesn’t need to, either.”

“I’m not trying to upset you, Stevie.”

“I know you’re not, and really, I’m fine. I just wasn’t expecting that kind of question is all. My mind is overloaded with my cases.”

“Are they too much for you?”

“Not at all. I do better when I stay busy.”

“Some people do that just to distract themselves from something else.”

“Such as?”

Melissa shrugged. “It could be any number of things. Life. You know.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“So is it really a wrap with your counselor?”

“It is. She believes I’m mentally, emotionally, and spiritually good now with what happened back in Dallas. I believe I am too. I know I am.”

“That makes me happy to hear. I was really worried about you for a while.”

“Well, there’s no need to worry anymore. So tell me how Haven’s teacher conference went yesterday.”

Melissa rolled her eyes. “As expected. I swear, my granddaughter…”

“She’s not gonna put up with any boy’s bullshit.”

“I know, but she can’t just punch one in the face for mouthing at her.”

“Yes, she can and she did,” I chuckled.

“She’s in third grade, Stevie.”

“And your point?”

“I’m just—hell, I don’t know.”

“I’m proud of her.”

“Let’s just hope it doesn’t happen again. That was the second time. I don’t want the school to kick her out.”

“They’re not gonna kick her out.”

“It was challenging raising my kids during my twenties and thirties but I’ve gotta tell you, it’s kicking my ass raising my granddaughter in my fifties. Don’t get me wrong. I love her so much and would do anything for her. It’s just really hard sometimes.”
