“Yeah, my dad is asleep. I could hear him snoring through the bedroom door when I checked on him a few minutes ago,” Stevie told me.
“Good, because I need to talk to you. First, tell me how you’re feeling.”
“About what?”
I half-laughed. “About what you went through yesterday.”
“Zac, I feel fine. Really. I’m trying not to think about it too much because I just start getting pissed off again. And I know this may sound cold-hearted, but I feel nothing about Mr. Ferguson being dead other than I’m glad.”
“It’s not cold-hearted. It’s understandable.”
“He was an awful human being.”
“Yes, he was.”
“Anyway… What else do you wanna talk to me about?”
“Have you watched the Dallas news yet?”
“No, and that’s intentional. I figured what happened to me was on it and I don’t wanna see it.”
“Stevie, there’s one video that I want you to watch and I’m not trying to upset you in any way.”
“Why do you want me to watch it?”
“Because of what it shows of youandme.”
She let out a long sigh. “Okay.”
“Thank you. I’m gonna text you a link, so hang on.”
“I’m hanging.”
I sent the link and waited for her to watch it. About a minute later, she got back on the phone.
“That was really hard to watch, yet I loved seeing you coming to rescue me. I’m so choked up right now,” she said, and I could hear the emotion in her voice.
“Did you see when I kissed your cheek?”
“Yes. I could tell that you’d been crying too.”
“Avery saw all of that on the news. When I got home, she confronted me about it.”
“The thought of that hadn’t even crossed my mind. Oh my God, Zac! That video clearly shows how close you and I are. Did you admit it to Avery?”
“No. I refused to discuss anything about you and me with her because it’s none of her business.”
“But she knows about us now.”
“She knows very little, Stevie. What was on the news could easily be viewed as one friend running to help another and being thankful that she survived being taken hostage and nearly killed. The people who know you and know me in this community will see it as just that. Bash was in the video too, in the background, when I was carrying you to the ambulance. We’reallclose friends and that’s the story that I’m sticking to because it’s also true.”
“I didn’t notice Bash because I was so focused on you. Oh, Zac, I’m really worried.”
“About what?”
“Avery knowing that you and I are romantically involved. You not admitting it to her is irrelevant.”
“Stevie, you don’t need to worry. I’m not. I have no idea how much she knows, but I don’t care. If she’s figured it out, I want her to wrestle with the reality of you and me, and also all she did that destroyed our marriage and pushed me completely away from her.”
