“No—you haven’t.”

I turned to leave, but before I could, Avery threw her arms around my neck and started kissing me. I was caught off guard and in the couple of seconds that she had her lips on mine, all I could think about was Stevie. All I could see was Stevie.

“Stop!” I yelled at Avery, pushing her away from me. “This isn’t happening.”

“I just wanna be with you.”

“You just wanna fuck me?”

“I wanna be close to you again, Zac. We used to be so good together.”

I scoffed at Avery and then went back inside expecting her to follow me but she didn’t. I wanted to talk to Stevie, but before I called her, I fixed myself a strong gin and tonic with the bottle of Neptunia that she bought for me. As soon as I was back inside my bedroom with the door locked, I sat down on the edge of my bed and called my lover whom I hoped was going to be understanding of what just happened between Avery and me.

“Hey, you,” she said, answering her phone.

“Hey.”

“I was getting worried because I hadn’t heard from you this evening. I thought Avery might’ve pulled something.”

“Well, she did pull something.”

“God, she didn’t hit, scratch or throw something at you again, did she?”

“No. Not that.”

“Then what?”

“Well, I’ve already told you how she’s kept things peaceful this week and also how she’s been doing things around here like cooking, cleaning, and all.”

“Right.”

“Tonight, she asked me about joining in on Malcolm’s bedtime story. Thinking of it benefitting him, I told Avery yes and it went well.”

“Where was she in his room?”

“She sat on the floor beside his bed while I lay in it with him and read him the story.”

Stevie sighed. “Okay.”

“Malcolm fell asleep before I finished, then Avery and I left his room. While we were in the hallway, she asked me if I’d go sit by the pool with her because she wanted to relax and just visit with me. I didn’t wanna go but decided to because I wanted to see if I could find out what her real motive was for asking me outside.”

“And did you?”

“Yes. After apologizing to me for all the hell that she’s brought to our marriage, she begged me for a second chance. She promised me that she’s changed.”

“What did you say, Zac?”

“I told her that it was too late for us and also that I didn’t believe a word she said, then she started crying. I stood up to leave and Avery threw herself at me.”

“Threw herself at you?”

“Yes, she kissed me but I pushed her away. Then she told me that she wanted to be close to me because we used to be so good together.”

“You mean, you and Avery used to fuckso goodtogether.”

I blew out a hard breath. “Yes—in the beginning, but it didn’t last long because Avery changed. Listen, Stevie, I hate telling you all of this. I can tell that it’s upset you and rightfully so, but I figured you’d wanna know what happened.”

“I do wanna know and yes, I’m upset—but not at you. I’m pissed off at Avery. She is desperately trying to manipulate you into rekindling your marriage and I wanna know why.”
